Pretty close.....I am not sure I would include Martinez in the calculations....but I am sure a defenseman with a comparable cap number will take the spot.
The only thing at this point to really be concerned about is about $3 million in B bonuses. So the Kings will have to add between $1 million and $2 million to the roster over the course of the season. But with injuries and call ups that should not be too difficult.
I am also still not completely comfortable using Doughty's cap hit to be above the floor....just in case he is not ready to play in the NHL this season.
Agreed. Maybe that's why the Kings seem to be pretty serious about Mathieu Schneider. His $5,625,000 cap number would solve alot of problems. Plus he's a good player. I hope we can get him.
I've added Doughty to the original list. I was reticent at first, but after the Breakfast with the GM, I'm more sold on the fact that he has a better than 80% chance of making the team assuming health.
I have 14 forwards and 6 defensemen. Obviously, the Kings will carry 7 D-men and after O'Sullivan signs, you might see the Kings trade a veteran forward (or two) to make room under their (cheap-o) budget of $40 mil cash, maybe during or at the end of camp. The trade(s) could land the veteran D-man they're looking for or maybe just draft picks. I don't think it will be Schneider due to his huge salary unless the Ducks have a need for Armstrong and Calder and are willing to give us a fairly good pick with Matthieu (not likely).
It's also possible that no one gets traded and the Kings sign a cheap old D-Man. Either way, the Kings are $1M under the floor using my list and that's without O'Sully and Richardson signed, so the floor of course won't be an issue (really never was.)

That would leave about $4.8 million for O'Sullivan, Richardson and another defenseman. Let's assume for a moment that O'Sullivan gets about $3.5 million and Richardson gets about $750,000. The would only leave about $550,000 for a veteran defenseman. That will not really get anyone of value. So somebody will have to be traded to make room for the 7th defenseman coming in.

Sure, and we could also assume that the first year of O'Sullivan's contract might be somewhere in Brown's realm of pay -- hypothetically let's say it's about $2.8 million. So piggybacking on the rest of your figures, that small change alone would increase what we can pay a veteran defender to $1.25 million. That pay range could get us someone like Kent Huskins ($650,000) or Sean O'Donnell ($1,250,000) from Anaheim, for example.

In terms of cap number the average is what matters....but the Kings "cap number" is much closer to the salary floor than their "actual salary" number (around $37-$39 million depending on who is on the active roster). This is because of ELS bonuses in the contracts of Kopitar, Boyle, Johnson, Purcell, and Doughty add up to about $5 million. The team's actual salary for the 2008-09 season is at about $31-$33 million and in this case if the team has a $40 million budget for "actual salary" for the 2008-09 season. So the front loading of Stoll's contract does matter.

I don't understand what the big deal is. The Kings are almost at the cap number floor now and have plenty of options open to fill out the roster. The actual salary, or "cash money", number is way below the limit imposed by AEG therefore leaving plenty of room for options.

The 40 million budget that was mentioned by Hammond (if that's what you're referring to) is talking about the cash budget for actual salaries being paid out for the year. So by using Irish Blues' website and hitting the "Show Player Salaries" button, you'd get the following:

The difference? Dean Lombardi operates off a ``cash'' budget each year, rather than simply the salary-cap figure we're all familiar with. The Kings are operating on a cash budget of roughly $40 million this season. The salary-cap number can, and almost certainly will, be higher.
Only way he makes $3,475,000 is if he earns all his bonuses.
Which would mean Doughty would have the best rookie season ever (finishing in the top 5 in voting for the Norris and/or Hart trophies, scoring in the top 10 in the NHL for defensemen and being voted to the year end all star team). If he does all of that he deserves $3.45 million (actually he would get more than $3.45 million....but he would deserve that too).

I was wondering that as well. If the buyouts do not count towards the budget then Dean has about $2 million more to play with.
