I'd do that. Lou doesn't like dealing picks but Smyth is great player.

I don't like Friesen going because he had such a good post-season. As the say though, you have to give to get and there aren't too many Ryan Smyth's in the NHL.

Laraque refuses to fight for another NHL team so his value is nothing. So it really breaks down to:
Jeff Friesen, Matt DeMarchi, Mike Rupp, a 2nd, and a 5th for Ryan Smyth? Thanks but no thanks. Smyth is better than Friesen but he is not worth that much more.

If Laraque is no go, what would EDM include instead?

no no no and isbister is not a bust (not yet anyway) if you seen his last 15-20 games you would see why.

and Friesen doesn't help the Oilers much outside of this season and the next if he resigns (and if there is a season)

friesen would help edm

with his speed and shot, he would fit perfectly in edmonton with other fast, creative players like York,Dvorak, Hemsky, etc. He makes 3 million and is not a UFA next year, they can retain him im pretty sure with a qualifying offer. He would be cheaper then Smyth anyway .

That was an extreme over-statement as Laraque himself has already proclaimed.. he was simply trying to show how much he loved Edmonton and how badly he wanted to remain an Oiler. I personally wouldn't deal Smyth to New Jersey unless Hale or Martin was coming back.. we can't afford to deal away two of our best trading chips (Smyth + Laraque) without addressing one of our three major needs: A top 2 line centerman, a puck moving d-man and a goaltender of the future. A package of Martin + Ahonen sounds much more appealing..

Well then the feeling is mutual because Smyth wouldn't address any needs for our team either. LW is fine with Elias and Friesen there, C and RW though are not. Also Hale is untouchable, and I'm pretty sure Martin is also.

You would make a good GM; if the Oilers are going to deal Ryan Smyth, they should really adress their needs.

I also agree that Laraque's value is in tact. I don't believe for a minute that in a heated playoff series he wouldn't dance.

Martin is valuable to us right now, Ahonen is not.

Would either of these two counter offers suffice?

To EDM
Ahonen
Mike Rupp/2nd round pick/Matt DaMarchi

(DaMarchi should be a #3-6 defenseman in about 2-3 years, but he doesn't have much offensive skill)

To NJ:
Smyth

To EDM:
Ahonen
Martin

To NJ:
Smyth
Dvorak

I don't really like dealin Martin, but if I had to, I'd want to expand the deal to include Dvorak, who I think would be dynamite with Elias and Gomez.

Why? Martin is 22, he played in the young stars game and has been racking up minutes on the NJ blueline. He could be a top pairing defenseman for the next 15 years. NJ wouldn't want to trade him.

I don't want to move DeMarchi, there are 4 devils defensive prospects that I want NJ to keep. Hale, Martin, Kadeikin, and DeMarchi. DeMarchi may be the player that will allow White to become expendable.

DeMarchi is an interesting blueliner. I don't want NJ to move him, but if he's part of a reasonable package for Smyth...I hope Lou makes that deal.

If DeMarchi is moved, that leaves Kadeikin as the only prospect on our blueline that has NHL potetial, many may make a case for Chvatal but I don't see an NHL career with him.

In any case, I think we should pick up a bunch of defensemen in the next draft. It's nice that Hale and Martin are succeeding, but we should really have more than 2 guys down at the farm with NHL upside.

I agree but those guys won't be read for atleast 4 or 5 years....thats a little long to wait. Thats why it is important to keep what we have now. Trade from the Left Wing, we have Ryznar, Voros, Pihlman and Tallackson all going to be fighting for basicly the same role.

Blackjack,

Check out Dvorak's stats since coming to Edmonton. He's been our best 2-way forward (along with York) and he's still young. He'll be Edmonton's 2nd line RW for a long, long time.

How can you possibly ask for Smyth (our best player, our leader and our greatest asset), when you even refuse to cough up a guy who "COULD be a top pairing defenseman for the next 15 years.

A package of Smyth & Dvorak has greater trade value than Ahonen & Martin...Come on!

Cerebral's offer of

Smyth, Laraque ----- for ----- Ahonen, Martin

is very generous...That's the best Lou could do for those two....Dvorak...? Not a chance!

How about this:

Ryan Smyth
Jason Smith
Jason Chimera/Georges Laraque

for

Ari Ahonen
Paul Martin
Micheal Rupp
1st 2004
5th 2004

Edmonton gets all 3 things they need: Top Goalie Prospect, puck moving d-men, and a centerman over 5'4 Not tomention another 1st round pick in 2004 they can use to pick somebody for the system.

NJD gets well... Ryan Smyth. Jason Smith is a fine d-man who can log heavy minutes in NJ, and Chimera/Laraque would bring different aspects to the NJD 4th line.

I'm not sure if Edm gets full value here, but I'm trying to hit "needs" here.

These deals are too large and do not address any of our needs........

1. A Defensemen
2. A RW
3. A Center.

NJ is going to gut their future Smyth. Geeeeze it only took Morrison (who at the time was nothing more than a very good prospect) and Denis Pederson(4th line checking center) to get Mogilny.
