Bruins to Offer Hossa 12yr/$100M Contract + more from Brooks

-The New York Rangers want Mats Sundin and Jagr . They want them on one-year over-35 contracts.
-Jagr arrived yesterday in NY
-It's believed Sundin will ultimately choose between the Rangers or Wings.
-Teams interested in Avery Maple Leafs, Blackhawks and Canucks, with other suitors expected to emerge.
-Rangers to check in about Hossa but the Post learned the Bruins will offer him a 12 years, 100 million dollar contract.
-The Rangers, who will check in on Brian Rolston
-The Blueshirts have essentially targeted four free agent defensemen of whom they hope to sign two - their own Michal Rozsival, Ottawa's Wade Redden, Pittsburgh's Brooks Orpik and Montreal's Mark Streit.
-Sather rejected Rosy's offer of 4 years for 5 million per season.
-Rangers have zero interest in Campbell's 7M contract he wants.
-Orpik wants a 6 year, 4 million per contract with a NTC. Rangers will probably offer him a 4 year, 4 millin contract.
-Streit will ask for about 3-3.5M.

So basically, the Rangers are rumored to be interested in every good player available. What a shock.

The Post has been told that the Bruins are preparing to present the 29-year-old winger with an offer in the neighborhood of $100M over 12 years

Holy cow... I don't believe it. He'd be 40 with a cap hit over 8 million.

If thats the case, I don't see how he isn't a bruin at 12:01 EST.

While the Rangers will check in on Marian Hossa, The Post has been told that the Bruins are preparing to present the 29-year-old winger with an offer in the neighborhood of $100M over 12 years.

So basically, the Rags are interested in every high profile free agent. Is this really news to anyone?

Do they need another center? Chris Dury as a $7mill dollar 3rd line center, that's on par with the Holik contract. Gomez, one of the leagues highest earners on 2nd line minutes?

Post lockout parity my arse.

i know bruins fans want hossa, but i don't think they want him *that* much. jesus, i don't know which figure is more ridiculous. no way anyone offers him that... an $8.3mil cap hit all the way until he's 41?

HF would explode.

edit: heh, and i like the thread title change. seeing the numbers like that are just mind-blowing.

not buying it......but........

My analysis...
Neighborhood of 100m = 12yrs x 8m = 96m
Cap hit = 8m
Front-loaded contract with 90% of total within first eight years, meaning 11m per in the first eight years, which would leave 8 million and four years remaining.....which would be attractive on a buyout[less than 1m/yr].
Basically Hossa is going to get his money, its a matter of making it fit.

Yeah I think this type of "cap circumvention" is going to become more common place. Teams basically adding years with the intention of likely waiving the player in his later years.

First of all this is a BS rumour.

Secondly, there are rules to front ending the contracts and you cant front that much - I know the Erat deal was postponed because of that although I don't recall the actually length / loading splits - something like no less than 50% of the average year or something....

This thread isn't about the Rangers even though it's Brooks who reports it. But your Ranger hate is always appreciated.

Not what the Boston papers are saying .

Bruins unlikely to make splash
By Stephen Harris
Tuesday, July 1, 2008

It’s difficult to envision how the Bruins [team stats] can take a serious run at Hossa, Campbell or any other top-priced UFA. Reportedly, the team’s payroll is currently about $49.5 million. The NHL salary cap rises $6.4 million to $56.7 million for next season, leaving the Bruins about $7 million in clear space.

Bruins GM Peter Chiarelli said yesterday a broad range of options is conceivable, and there is a good chance the B’s will bag at least one free agent today. But he indicated it’s unlikely the team will make a “huge splash” in the market.

But a reliable source said, barring any surprises, the B’s will be shopping in the second rank of free agent forwards.

that article actually does clear up something i was confused about... i thought the buyout deadline had passed but apparently boston has some extra time because of an arbitration case. interesting.

That's correct, Dennis Wideman elected to go to arbitration which will grant the Bruins a 48 hour window to buy out players once Wideman's arbitration award is granted. I believe the 48 hour window only applies to cases where the player has elected arbitration while it wouldn't apply if the team had elected to go to arbitration. I'm hoping someone will correct me if I'm wrong on that.

you're correct, ac as far as I know. Had it been team elected, let's say MAF with the Pengs & Shero, this doesn't apply as Shero elected to do so.

but if I'm wrong, please correct.
