Russians will always have a bigger "glow" to them, since they generally are more exciting to watch, and they have the bigger history iow; the big red machine.

I'm very proud that swedes can compete on this level. We are a people of 9 million. The russians are a bigger country with lots of people. They have a strong hockey tradition (like sweden) and have produced some of the greatest players of all time, Tretiak, Kharlamov, the green line, etc. From time to time sweden can produce superstars but the russians do it all the time. At the moment the NHL players from these countries are about equally strong but I don't se it happen for long.

/cheers

Me too. While there's a significant difference in population numbers, the number of registered hockey players for Sweden and Russia is similar according to Wikipedia (not a 100% credible source, I know).

Country Players % of Population
Sweden 67,747 0.71%
Russia 77,202 0.05%

There are two nations with a higher % of population as hockey players than Sweden. One is Canada, the other is located between Sweden and Russia.

I'm a big Nabokov fan, and will say they are equal. But Lundqvist is MUCH younger as you know.

Swedes have a lot of guys who are at the end of their careers. I do not think we will see Forsberg Sundin and maybe even Lidstrom 2 years from now.

In terms of experience Swedes have the upper hand but in 2 years from now it won't matter.

A Russian finished ahead of Lundqvist in the Vezina race this year. Also, Nobokov was selected to the NHL First All-Star Team while Lundqvist finished fourth in voting.

Speaking of goalies, here are all Russian and Swedish goalies who have played 100 or more games in the NHL.

Pelle Lindbergh was already a terrific goaltender when he was killed in a car crash at the age of 26. He had won the Vezina the previous season.

Isn't Irbe Latvian?

And wow...it seems like Soderstrom was around for more than 3 years.

Edit: Well I guess a lot of these "non-Russian" players were technically born in the USSR so that's why they keep coming up.

Swedes as a whole are mostly aging, and the Russians are for the most part just coming into their own.
