Oh snap, it's true!

I hope the Blues match it.

Well then, I hope they match. Backes is our future captain. 2.5 isn't so bad.

Depends if there is any NMC or NTCs attached but anything less than 3.0 and St. Louis matches.

And JD can call Gillis and thank him for doing the legwork on this deal. Backes is worth it.

I dont understand why Vancouver would do this. This offer is very matchable. Is it to save face with their own fan base... "At least we tried something"

Holy crap!!! I love this guy, but will mngmt cough up that much dough to match?
I would hope so, we can absorb that hit. Backes is going to be worth that jack if he isn't already.

2.5mil/year isn't too much I think. He's only going to get better scoring wise. He already is our best physical player.

Isn't that almost exactly what Stempniak makes? Sounds fair to me. That's about what I expected the Blues to sign him for anyway.

Still, I'm crossing my fingers and hoping the Blues match. I can't see them not matching it, but you never know.

I don't get it either. I don't think there's any chance of us letting Backes walk for just a 2nd round pick. We were probably offering around 2 mil/season anyway.

i might, just might, consider letting him go if it looked like we were going to get a high 1st rounder... but not for a second rounder.

backes is still getting better anyways. 2.5M will seem like a bargain next summer. we really should sign him.

i don't think they can bring in better value with that 2.5M.

hopefully JD waits the full 7 days to match as a big F U to gillis just so he can't use the second rounder in a trade or other offer sheets.

2nd round pick...not near enough.

The fact that Backes would sign an offer sheet and that Vancouver did this pisses me off though. Could we match the offer sheet and then trade him to Vancouver's division for more than just a 2nd round pick?

When you match a RFA offer, you can not trade the player for 1 year.

No you cannot trade a player for at least the first year, and maybe longer, if you match an offer sheet that has been extended to them.
