Let's pause for a moment and realize Joe Thornton is getting 7.2/year.

I know he took a discount, buuuut...

Not sure why people use Lidstrom as a measuring stick for everyone else's contract. He's played in DET for 15+ years and he gave them a discount when he signed. If he was a UFA this offseason, someone would have given him $10+M.

It is very possible that Campbell's play will fall off the last couple years of this contract. I just find it ironic though that the SAME DAY that teams are throwing multi-year deals at guys who are older now than Campbell will be at the end of this contract, but Campbell's guaranteed to be a POS when he's 35-36 YO.

Like I said - not fond of an 8 year deal - but I honestly think this is a good deal for the Hawks. It's not like there's a ton of other impact guys available, and this should push everyone on the blueline down to where they should be more comfortable.

Campbell is a good investment for a team really lacking defense or, specifically, scoring punch on the blue line. Had a really lousy team signed him or maybe a team like New Jersey that didn't get a ton of offense from the back end, OK, makes sense to pay big, but as is? Too much money for too long.

This deal makes Chara look like a steal and while I am no Habs fan what kind of genius does Gainey look like for the Markov deal with all the D signings this year?
They are spending $12.2M for one year, assuming that Khabibulin isn't dealt. After that the problem goes away.

And while they're deep on the blueline, they really needed a PP QB. Even with all the injuries last year, if the Hawks PP was even average they make the play-off's.

Chara's contact was signed when the cap was 20% lower than it is now. Of course his contract looks good, but at the time it was signed was the equivelant of $9M today.

Campbell wanted to cash in NOW, not later when he knows he won't get that kind of money down the road. But he hasn't proved to me anyways he's worthy of the money he makes like Chara, Lidstrom or Pronger make.

Nice team Chicago is assembling.

If Toews/Sharp can remain healthy for an entire season they should easily get 6th seed or higher.

Blackhawk fans will really like this signing for about 20 games, when you're first amazed by his mobility and flash. But once Campbell's initial awe-factor wears off, prepare to be really, really angry.

The worst is the length. In my book any GM that gives a player anything above 6 years is a bad GM. Most guys won't even reach that amount of years of quality hockey. There are a few exceptions like Malkin, Crosby, Ovechkin because of their age and talent.

sucks. i have always like the hawks but what an idiotic signing in my opinion. campbell will be bust. ridiculous amount of money for an average all around player. too long and too much. terrible.

No offense taken, here's my reasoning. Campbell is no bruiser (other than some huge open ice hits that I've seen from him), but he is much more physical than Rafalski is, and I wouldn't sign Rafalski for 5 years at that age anyway, I think the risk of his game declining during the contract is too high.

Hey Hawks fans, tune out the haters, they're just frustrated cause their Xbox won't let them go beyond the cap in their fantasy franchise leagues.

You FINALLY have a team that is spending, its great to see.

Next stop, the playoffs
