The rumored Edmonton offer is 9yrs/90 millions and i'm going to be pissed if we ever sign him anywhere close to that insane amount of both $$$ and years. You guys realize how much of a cap murderer a contract like this is right ? Of course that's just a rumor but i have no doubt that it will take at least 8m and 7 + years to get him and that's at minimum.
So think about it before rejoicing at the idea of signing Hossa.
We gotta pick one way or the other and frankly I don't think we tried one of the ways yet.
Well we finished first in the east with the no UFA way.............and I think if we go the Sundin way............we might just be able to go all the way.
No its not Gainey will not sign...... its Hossa, Sundin, or Jagr will not sign.........Bob Gainey has did everything he possibly could to try to land UFAs........
Plus, one ridiculous contract won't win you the cup...but it could lose you one later if you can't afford your young players.
I think one of the reasons Gainey tried to get Sundin early is he knew teams would make offers like Vancouver because there is not much available via UFA.

Not really since it's short term and thus doesn't eat a large amount of cap space for a long time. For a team that already has all the other pieces in places and the cap space it's totally worth it imho since Sundin is the type of player that can put you over the top despite not being a 100pts player.
Signing Hossa for 9yrs/90millions is much more dangerous than signing Sundin to 2yrs/20millions. Hell , Redden @ 6.5 for 6 years is more risky as well.

damn its ridiculous to offer hossa that money, mind you i would be real happy to sign him but that contract is crazy to absorb
simple thing to do is if mats sundin cant make up his freaking mind, sign jagr to 2-3 years for 6 to 8 million per year...
jagr would make less money than hossa, the contract would be a lot shorter and more importantly, jagr would produce as much if not more than hossa
This UFA market is a dud. Whoever gets Hossa will have to throw in a good bed in the deal, because that is where Hossa will be for the duration of the deal. He's not an Superstar like lecavelier, malkin, crosby, ovechkin. He also doesn't make anyone on the team better. He's not worth any kind of long term deal.
Wouldn't surprise me to see him just go to the highest bidder.
But as for us, signing Hossa and our wing pairs become:
Tanguay-Hossa
A. Kostitsyn-Kovalev
Higgins-S. Kostitsyn
Latendresse-Kostopoulos
Just ridiculous, but our centers won't be anything special. Plekanc-Koivu-Chipchura-Lapierre? Meh, I'd much rather forget Hossa and strengthen our center position.

Good point...but still a bit crazy when you look at Sundin and Hossa making more than Crosby Ovechkin Malkin Lindstrom etc
