Dellapina says Orpik turned down five-year deal from us

Quote:
As for the four-player trade that brought Nikolai Zherdev to the Rangers and sent Fedor Tyutin and Christian Backman to Columbus? Difficult to imagine that Sather didnít pull the trigger figuring he had Brooks Orpik on the way. But Orpik chose to take less per season to return to Pittsburgh for a six-year deal when he turned down the Rangersí five-year offer.
Interesting, to say the least. I have to admit, when I first heard about Tyutin and Backman being traded at work, my first thought was that Orpik was on his way over here. I was surprised to read a little while later that he re-signed with Pitt...

Kinda figured that is what happened, too bad he was the lone loyal FA from their cup run (I know Dupuis resigned but that made obvious sense for him). I would have loved to have Orpik and it really kills me that we missed out on him. I really wish we had gone full tilt after him from yesterday before getting Rozsy but hopefully we'll recover from missing out here.

Just dropped by the Pens board and one of their beat bloggers said that Orpik had one foot out the door until half the team called him and begged him to stay. Sounds to me like we had them beat monetarily but lost out to longstanding chemistry. Though there's not much Slats could have done here, it's still gonna eat at me that we missed out on the last piece of a great defense especially when he'll be a division rival for years to come. Being perfectly honest here, I spent the day refreshing TSN's signing updates and even though I never fully expected to get either of them, seeing Orpik went back to Pitt crushed me more then when Aves officially left us and I am as big of an Avery supporter as I know but the thought of finally replacing Beuk had me enthralled until it was ripped away by a team I've really grown to hate...

If true, Sather tried, you have to give Orpik credit taking less to stay in a place he was comfortable in & had sucess, I can't fault a guy for wanting to be happy.

Makes me angry with Avery who went for the money grab.

Yeah, but something tells me Avery didn't have many teammates who were calling him and asking him to stay.

And as for the most overrated FA in this year's class...I think Campbell will wind up taking home that award.

Dammit!

I would have been so happy if we got Orpik..so so happy.

Mans just coming into his prime and he knows how to step up in big games.

Well, at least he tried.

Maybe..just..maybe..this means he will offer Jagr more money now and get him back now that we have a little more money to spend that would have went to Orpik.

OK its a tie.

Campbell is a one dimensional O minded D man, But at least he excels at that one thing

Orpik can hit, clear the crease. We dont need to sign a crease clearer to a 6 year deal.

im not saying that he is being overpaid,(the sad thing is he could have got alot more, probably from the rangers) considering what they are going for, but he is definitley overhyped. he was probably the 3rd best UFA d man but that was only by default

Among the remaining UFAs, who would everyone like to see signed the most? If Numminen was healthy I would have liked Teppo for 1 year. Keith Carney for 1 year also isn't such a bad idea. Dunno if Rob Blake would come over. Again, 1 year contract. Maybe get Luke Richardson over cheap and teach Dubinsky how to fight? Jason Smith? Those seem like the only ones I'd be interested in. Especially since short contracts would be most desirable for us now.

I wish Avery took his method. Take less to play where you love.

I predicted Smith on my blog yesterday.

This team has gotten very young all of a sudden, and Drury aside, there isn't much in terms of veteran leadership. Smith is a real character guy in the room, and while NJ may have drafted him, he's an Oiler boy. Maybe Slats has a good rapport with him.

I figure:

Redden-Staal
Rozsival-Girardi
Smith-Pock/Potter/Fahey/Sanguinetti/???

Not for nothing, but Staal/Rozsival worked out pretty well for a few stretches last season. I would think that Renney would reunite them instead of pairing two right handed shooting defensemen (Rozy and Girardi) together.

Thank god we didn't oversign Orpik to a 5 year deal. That would have been awful to have a $4mil 3rd pairing dman for 5 yrs. One who isn't even that great, he can just hit. Consider me happy. Also how many long term contracts do we need.

Gomez - 6 more years (although I have a feeling that he won't be here all 6)
Drury - 4 more years
Redden- 6 more years
Rosy - 4 more years

than core players such as - Dubi, Staal, Zherdov that will be resigned to long term deals.

plus young players such as - Sangs, Del Zotto, Cherry, Ani, Grachev that probably will crack the lineup.

There needs to be a little movement, and some contracts have to come off the books each year to keep bringing kids up. We don't really have any big contracts coming off the books in the next 2-3 yrs.

Well, you can rationalize that Orpik likened the security (one year longer), a chance to win (staying with a team been to the final)......It is all understandable to take a little less money.

But Hossa is a real head scratcher. I guess he is really hungry for winning.
