Dawes/Sjostrom/Jessiman/Moore receive qualifying offers

Noticed this little blurb in a link to Zip's blog posted in another thread:

"Overnight, two text messages snuck in amid the silence. Just digesting them now with coffee. As long expected, but never announced, RFAs Nigel Dawes and Freddie Sjostrom apparently received qualifying offers. Wise moves. Two quality youngsters."

http://weblogs.newsday.com/sports/ho...l_to_turn.html

If it's been reported elsewhere, I apologize.

Jessiman was also qualified per Dellapina.

However, the Rangers did make qualifying offers to retain the matching rights to restricted free agent forwards Nigel Dawes, Fredrik Sjostrom and Hugh Jessiman.

So, no word on Moore? Or Baranka for that matter, though I'm not sure it matters with him.

Since he only came out of college 2 years ago, is that an issue? I thought we had him for at least one more year before he became an RFA.

Imagine that. The Rangers managed to sign Parenteau and Zaba. And still got around to QO.

According to NHLSCAP he is an RFA:

I know, it's almost incomprehensible that we were able to make multiple signings within a few days! How does Sather do it?

You really seem confident about this. I've seen you mention it in multiple threads. I suggest you make a clean break with Mr. Avery ASAP, however, it will make it much easier to swallow when he signs elsewhere.

If I were another team I'd sign Dawes to an offer sheet....

You can make a case that he's worth giving up a 3rd round pick......... $863,156-$1,307,812 Third-round pick

The Rangers cap situation makes them an easy target....

Cap situation? I was under the impression we had $5+ to spend.

we do but that's with Dawes accepting his qualifying offer. If Dawes gets signed to an offer sheet that's less money the Rangers can spend....

Actually the Rangers can spend up to around $16M more this offseason but they would need to cut salary before the start of the season...

Yeah, and the most obvious RFA who would need an offer is Dawes, so I doubt it becomes a problem, but I see your point...

I'd be pissed if Dawes was let go, especially at this tense time when as of right now we have no legitimate or potentially heavy goal scorers on the wing.

Do you guys think that Hugh may become trade bait in the not too distant future? If so, for whom? I know he's been struggling to make the team since leaving Dartmouth and maybe a change of scenery may do both he and the Rangers some good? I'm just asking, so please spare me the smart alec answers.

That's an interesting thought given the recent signings we've made.

I suppose it's possible, as Forechecker mentioned, we've brought in some bigger, gritty players. I have no idea who he'd be traded for really, but I can't imagine he'd fetch much of anything on his own. He's been making solid progress though, especially in this past season, so I'm reluctant to let him go unless it's part of a deal that makes the organization substantially better. Though I guess if he does nothing this year then he'd lose all value...

then I guess this leads to my next questions...do you and the other Rangers fan here think that the 08-09 season will be a sort of "must make or break" year for Hugh? Why or why not?

Yep, I see a trade on the level of a Torres for Brule. Jessiman for another underachieving prospect. (O'Marra/McArdle?)
