The general impression I get is that our focus has shifted to Hossa for now but we're definitely not done with Sundin.

Yes, especially if posters keep mentioning the Rangers.

Yeah we do agree on everything except Sundin having made up his mind. It's not Sundin but Gainey that made up his mind.

Basically, Gainey told Sundin you know my offer. It's on the table until I happen to sign someone else. So, Mats, I gotta tell ya I'm going to the next player on my list.

that's what I think has happened.

Was it Sundin's Negotiating Rights for Ryder's?

It appears that the Habs had given a team exclusive permission to talk to Ryder before July 1st, but he eventually signed with Boston...knowing that Toronto had given Montreal permission to talk to Sundin, is it possible that the Leafs were the other team looking to sign Ryder?

Where does it appear that Gainey gave a team the rights to negotiate with Ryder?

Sorry, here's the link from the Boston Globe:

http://www.boston.com/sports/hockey/...s/bruins_blog/

Doesn't disclose which team, just that they couldn't come to terms with Ryder...if they had, I imagine Montreal would have been given some compensation...unless it was to talk with Sundin.

Fletcher said he was chasing younger guys, and looking at the Finger and Hagman numbers, I can readily imagine that Ryder would have fit with that general approach.

Yet 4 million for Finger would = +4 million for Ryder, wouldn't it? And wasn't Toronto his favorite team growing up?

I wonder if it was the Leafs what their low ball offer was 3.5 million

If that article is to be believed, then it only makes sense that he was the compensation involved in the Sundin deal. It makes sense anyway, you can talk to ryder if you let us talk to sundin.

Implausible suggestion. Fletcher almost undoubtedly wanted a prospect or a pick for a rebuilding team, not a slight head start on negotiating with Ryder.

Considering what Fletcher has done on free agency, it is highly plausible.

I'm thinking Dallas because of the Gainey/Carbonneau connection.

Tom Hicks and George Gillett are in the midst of a major, major feud. I can't imagine Montreal going out of their way to do business with Dallas.

That doesn't mean Gainey and Jackson/Hull can't deal still.

Burke hates old buddy Lowe now because of the Penner issue, but he said if Edmonton contacted the Ducks for a deal he wouldn't refuse to deal, but someone other than himself would have to negotiate with Lowe...he would just yay or nay it.

I guess the poll this time here -- should Montreal wait for Sundin to make up his mind, or try to swing a trade to land the guy they need?

And if it's the latter, who could they target?
