How can Ryder's be the worst? Sure, it may seem to be an overpayment, but the term is relatively short compared to other deals. Do you guys really think Redden and Campbell will be worth 6.5 and 7.1 million respectively in 4-5 years?
BTW, Ryder had two consecutive 30 goal season, better than anyone on Boston except for Glen Murray, who is finished. He'll bounce back to form under Julien and playing with Bergeron. It's an overpayment, but it is not the worst signing of 2008. The Redden, Theodore, Campbell (vastly overrated), Finger, Rolston (35 years old - there is NO WAY of getting rid of that cap hit - check the CBA), and Commodore deals are much worse.
Jeff Finger was just ridiculous.. so ridiculous that people wouldn't believe the news or thought it was a typo.
I mean.. c'mon I thought Leafs were trying to be like Wings. This is anything but. I live in Toronto, somewhere in my heart I feel really sick about Toronto just not getting it together.
I think Prospal signing for 4 years (3.5mil per) is a steal. He has proven he is a top line player (especially on that line) and his chemistry with Lecavalier is undeniable.
Worse: Avery, if he wore out his welcome with the NYR, where the fans adored him and he loved the city, I give him at best 2 years before his whole team hates his guts.
I love how so many Habs fans are pumping up the Ryder deal as the worst one ever. Its like when a kid takes another kids toy and they insist that they didn't want it anyway... compounded further by the fact that he went to Boston. Yes, his deal is high... but he is not the worst deal of the past couple of days.
Streit is nowhere near one of the best signings. He's a decent player, but you want more than an average third line forward and powerplay specialist (on the point) for that money, especially considering Streit is not a good powerplay quarterback. He makes a lot of bad decisions with the puck on the backend and tends to turn it over quite a bit (he was a lot worse than usual in the playoffs though so those who have only seen him then might be unfairly harsh towards him).
Maybe Streit will prove me wrong, but I bet he'll miss those nice Markov feeds. Souray sure did miss those... before his injured anyway (which is something pretty much everyone knew would happen... the injury I mean).
Just like Souray couldn't turn the Oilers' powerplay into a winner (I believe their powerplay was actually the worst before Souray's injury), Streit likely won't be able to do that with the Islanders'.
Hopefully the Islanders plan to use him as a forward, because as a defenseman he's Brisebois-esque.

I love how you fail to understand that Ryder wasn't playing in Montréal....
Worst is the lack of the San Jose Sharks making moves to help their team. They need defense and missed out, especially when it came to Ron Hainsey.
All is forgiven if they find a way (trade or offer sheet) to bring in JayBo.

Agreed. It seems like some of them are just mad that many Habs players improve their gameplay once they leave the Habs and the fact that superstar UFAs refuse to sign here.
how was tucker one of hte best signings? over 2 mil for a 3rd th line guy
The agitator status pays a bit more because some teams are searching to add that to the line-up. He takes lots of abuse and attracts attention by getting under people leaving your star player more room. That's worth more than a 3rd liner without that aspect of play. Like it or not. I'd have welcome him on on the habs our third line at that salary. He could show Lapierre and Latendresse how to do it.
Honorable mentions go to Kurt Sauer and Radim Vrbata
WORST
1) Finger - this might be the worst free agent signing in NHL history. Sit down Alexei Zhamnov, your reign of shame is finally over. This one is so bad that even today, almost 36 hours later, I still caught myself laughing at it. The signing was funny enough, but Fletcher saying "Joel Quenville told me Finger was one of the five best defensemen in the entire Western Confrence last year." I guess Cliff didn't notice that same Quenville made Finger a healthy scratch in the playoffs.
2) Commodore
3) Huet
4) Campell
5)Redden
Tucker doesn't deserve to be anywhere near the top...if anyone has watched him play lately he's got a shot but that's it. He weak defensively, doesn't fight or hit anymore. He's not good enough to be near the top of any list.

Nah, Zhamnov remains the worst. 12 million for 24 games, 1 goal, and 9 assists. Thank God he's no longer on the cap.
