Here is the actual trade Gainey did

Ryder + Streit + 1st rounder this year, 2nd rounder next year

for

Tanguay, 5th rounder this year and 3M cap space.

Question is, are we actually a better team after the trade? Ryder didn't play much last year but Streit did.

You can add Kostitsyn to that deal for the Habs, it freed up money for him.

Tanguay will get more points than Streit and Ryder combined. Add the 2nd player who takes a spot and its way worth it.

Going along the lines of your reasoning we need to wait what that cap space will translate to per any signing of a UFA/RFA.

Because the way you put it now...not too rosy.

Also, the team still has a 2nd rounder next year because of the Huet trade at the deadline....

Huet's departure is also extra cap space.

It all depends what Gainey does with that extra 3M.

For the next year? Yes...

You can also add Chipchura with the big club...

The team who got the best player wins the trade. In this case, that would be the Habs.

For rebuilding teams like Tampa , it makes sense to go for quantity over quality, but the Habs aren't rebuilding, so quality should always trump quantity.

Many of you guys would blamed Gainey for not signing Hossa or Rolston.

But, when you look at it :

- AK should get over 60pts next season.
- SK should get around 50pts nex year.
- Plek should get around 60-65pts.
- Tanguay should get around 65-70pts.
- Chipchura will get more points than Smoke.
- O'Byrne will get a much bigger impact.

I mean, we have already young pretty good forwards in our team. Our team will be better than next year because these young players will take another step.

Look at it :

Tanguay - Koivu - UFA scorer
AK - Plek - Kovy
Higgins - Chipchura - SK
Lats- Lapierre - Kosto/Bégin

Look at this roster : It's better than last year. I think we should get a scorer on the 1st line like Bertuzzi or Demitra.

What kind of messed up reasoning is this?
Ryder and Streit not comming back have nothing to do with getting Tanguay. None of the two would be back even if we didnt trade for Tangs.

If you still really want to have fun with that then I suggest you start with Pittsburgh going back to the Hossa deal.
Start with Hossa, Armstron, Christensen,1st rounder, Esposito,Malone,Ruutu,Roberts for nothing ?

Isn't 2009 supposed to be a better UFA year? If it is and we don't sign anybody to UFA then we'll have more money for next year.
