You got the years wrong it's 2008-2009 now, the one after where Koivu/Kovalev get new contracts in 2009-2010.
Wow that's a really tight situation in 2009-2010. Either the cap is going to have to go up or someone will have to be traded for younger/cheaper salaries. Can't some of Kovalev's new salary be rolled forward as bonuses since he's 35 or did I read that they closed that loophole now?
If the cap don't go up, we won't be able to keep everyone. The good news for us though is that Sergei Kostitsyn might turn into a really good top 6 forward as soon as this year, Lats could break out and become a good second line winger, and O'Byrne could become a regular with us.
Add to that Pacioretty, who shouldn't need much more time, and Valentenko, who will shortly be ready, and we'll be able to let someone go to free some cap space.
I don't think we would keep all of Kovy, Koivu and Tanguay if they all ask for raises...also, a guy like Higgins could be traded if he still too streaky this year.
The cap should go up slightly in the next few seasons but not as much as the last 2. That was only due to strength of the Canadian dollar that went from 0.70 to parity now...it was an artificial increase of NHL revenue.
Some teams are going to get screwed with big contract they given and trying to sign their RFA's in the next couple seasons IMO
