Thrashers, BlueJackets, Canucks after Meszaros & Vermette

From the Ottawa Sun today:

Quote:
The Senators are bracing for a raid on restricted free agents Antoine Vermette and Andrej Meszaros.

League sources told Sun Media yesterday the Canucks, Thrashers and Blue Jackets are so desperate to make a splash on the free-agent market, they're all looking at making offers for the highly touted winger and defenceman.

Given that the CBJ have added three dmen in the last two days, I'm not sure if they'd be going after Meszaros (he'd certainly be welcome).

But CBJ fans have been saying for months that Vermette would be a great fit in Columbus. I hope there is truth to that rumor.

That is a terrible deal, I understand why you wouldn't want any part of it.

However, I think Vermette would be the perfect fit in Vancity, just not sure we make good trading partners.

Honestly, the only offers the Sens wouldn't match would be offers that guarantee us a 1st round pick.

Yup.

I like Vermette, but hes not that legitimate first line forward we are looking for and need right now. And definitely not for basically our first line (Sedin-Sedin-filler).

I think Canuck fans would hunt Gillis down if this ever happened - ottawa would have two crazy lines to deal with...

Vermette to Columbus, please. That would just about finish out the Jackets free agency run...

I bet they're both asking for too much in their RFA negotiations.

Probably but Meszaros and Vermette are likely asking for something in the $3M-$4M range so the Sens would match anything in that range. For an offer sheet to work, teams would have to give up a 1st, 2nd and 3rd for each one, so the Sens might be better off taking the slew of picks rather than Edler and a 1st.

But in any other situation, Edler and a 1st is something the Sens look long and hard at IMO.

I wouldn't be surprised if there's a Boyle+ for Vermette/Meszaros+ deal. It's too bad Ottawa signed Auld or else you'd see Smith in there for sure.

I'd be surprised. Ottawa has already been through signing Wade Redden to a 6.5 mil deal for 2 years, now imagine 6.6 for 6 years. Most of the sound hockey minds say that Ottawa doesn't do this. I'd think Murray would look at picking up someone to a much shorter contract term from a number of other teams.

Yeah true, it's just weird to see a Tampa rumour with Ottawa in it, and an Ottawa rumour with Tampa in it.

To Ottawa

Brian Gionta
Travis Zajac
Vitaly Vishnevski
Conditional 2nd round if Gionta doesn't resign

Vs

To New Jersey

Antoine Vermette
Andrei Meszaros

Is this a good proposal from a Sens p.o.v. ???

The value isn't off, but we really don't get what we need. We already have plenty of centers (It's why Vermette is likely to be moved), and we need to add at least 2 solid Defensemen. If we can't make a trade for a Dman that's a significant upgrade over Meszaros, we won't even move him.

No. Replacing Meszaros on the blueline with Vishnevski just spells big time trouble. Gionta hasn't done squat for two seasons & is an UFA next season. Zajac isn't an improvement over Vermette. Ottawa adds ~6.8 million in salaries. No thanks.

Dealing for Vermette and Meszros spells trouble for the Devils. Remember, both players are RFA and need to be signed. According to nhlscap.com the Devils are already at 54,897,740 for next season. Resigning Vermette and Meszaros will eat up the money saved from the traded players, but I don't that you can sign both at round 7 million.

Vermette is a great playing who still has many years in front of him to improve and to become a impact player which he on my opinion has to potential to become. I say he would belong more in Columbus then in Ottawa.
