Looks like he's leaning towards 87. But I see why he like 27 so much, he's got his website done up with that number.

He should wear the number of the beast.

I love this move, getting Big George. He has good control down low and his mere presence will be something our opponents will now have to consider, something we never had before.

I'm happy that at this point in his career, like Tanguay, he feels ready to face playing in his home crowd.

We really lacked that big presence that he provides, something we clearly have seen with our past playoff appearance.

Georges can wear whatever number he wants. Who's gonna stop him?

He should wear each available number though the season.
Start at 15 and work his way to 99, skipping the ones taken or retired.

That's ridiculous. I don't even know how to elaborate on the many implications and general weirdness this suggestion has.

Leaf fan coming in peace, at least until the season starts.

Man, you guys got a good guy in Laraque. The guy creates so much space for the star players. He also intimidates and makes his presence known.

I wish we had signed him, but happy for him that he is going to his hometown.

We were just chatting on the Leaf board who we have that could step up to Laraque.

I already know this signing is going to look great for you guys.

Quite a good thing. The goal of my post wasn't to provide an intelligent idea

A good enforcer in the line-up plays on the psyche of the opposing team. Guys like Georges are far more valuable than the nayers think.

Entirely agree and we also seem to forget that Laraque has two stanley Cup finals in the past 3 years *not too shaby ... and likely not a coincidance either he plays a big role in a team even if he is sitting on the bench.

I have a feeling that Lats just went from 6'2 to 6'4 and kovy from 6'4 to 6'6. They will play with that more confidence, especially against team like the NYR or Boston or Philly...

Love the signing, Habs have definitely needed a legit tough guy for the past number of years. Surprised BG didn't go for it in '06, if what was said is true. It's going to be tough for teams to take liberties like they were for the next few years. Great signing!

what's with people saying MTL doesn't need an enforcer??

has everyone forgotten how Price has gotten run at, and Kovalev and others were pushed around and harassed at will in the playoffs?

having BGL as an insurance policy will make the other team think twice about doing that kind of BS on the ice.

I didn't think we needed an enforcer before (last season)...but I've changed my mind a bit.
The thing is we didn't need a normal no-hockey-skills-whatsoever enforcer like we had in previous seasons. But Georges for me is more than that. He is one of the best enforcers of the league and has really good puck protection/possession skills. He's also a really good teammate (judging from what has been said about him) and he's a local guy. So if we needed an enforcer, then for sure he was the perfect fit for us.

One of the things I didn't like about having an enforcer is that he would take the spot of someone else in the lineup. But after seeing Dandenault play almost every game, playing a few minutes a game, bringing absolutely nothing to the team (I'm sorry for him, but that's how it was) I came to the conclusion that an enforcer would atleast bring something to the team, which is getting us more respect. And it doesn't hurt the team since he will probably take Dandenault's spot.

15 years of watching sissies on ice while being convinced every year that the team is flawless will do that to some people.

The thing is, 4 years ago Laraque wouldn't have made that big of an impact. With all the cross-checks during the game that the NHL allowed, you had to have a big, strong team from top to bottom.
