Brilliant post....that is reality. The peace-loving, new-ager, wanna-be hippies take note. Why do you think GM's have always coveted a good enforcer? It's to curtail crap like what bhuya71 outlined so succinctly above.
A good enforcer in the line-up plays on the psyche of the opposing team. Guys like Georges are far more valuable than the nayers think.
Entirely agree and we also seem to forget that Laraque has two stanley Cup finals in the past 3 years *not too shaby ... and likely not a coincidance either he plays a big role in a team even if he is sitting on the bench.
I have a feeling that Lats just went from 6'2 to 6'4 and kovy from 6'4 to 6'6. They will play with that more confidence, especially against team like the NYR or Boston or Philly...
Love the signing, Habs have definitely needed a legit tough guy for the past number of years. Surprised BG didn't go for it in '06, if what was said is true. It's going to be tough for teams to take liberties like they were for the next few years. Great signing!
what's with people saying MTL doesn't need an enforcer??
has everyone forgotten how Price has gotten run at, and Kovalev and others were pushed around and harassed at will in the playoffs?
having BGL as an insurance policy will make the other team think twice about doing that kind of BS on the ice.
I didn't think we needed an enforcer before (last season)...but I've changed my mind a bit.
The thing is we didn't need a normal no-hockey-skills-whatsoever enforcer like we had in previous seasons. But Georges for me is more than that. He is one of the best enforcers of the league and has really good puck protection/possession skills. He's also a really good teammate (judging from what has been said about him) and he's a local guy. So if we needed an enforcer, then for sure he was the perfect fit for us.
One of the things I didn't like about having an enforcer is that he would take the spot of someone else in the lineup. But after seeing Dandenault play almost every game, playing a few minutes a game, bringing absolutely nothing to the team (I'm sorry for him, but that's how it was) I came to the conclusion that an enforcer would atleast bring something to the team, which is getting us more respect. And it doesn't hurt the team since he will probably take Dandenault's spot.
