2 years isn't a huge deal...would have liked 1 year, but as long as they're not paying him something like $6 mill, he should be a top 6 forward for both of those years
I don't like that at all. One year I'd have been fine with but having money tied up next year I don't like.
So with Kalinin we get Backman 2.0?
the thing is that the rangers arent going to go over the cap this year....that helps as people were saying they had to go over in order to ice a competitive team......also, 4.5 million is pretty cheap for a player who is very experience, can put in 30 or ore goals and play on the top two lines.....great signing sather
in kalinin he is mentally backman however when he is on he is wayyy more physical....i wouldnt say he would be the same as orpik but i would say he would be on par with girardi(maybe a tad bit less)
I've never seen so many people excited about a backward moves...
this team is probably at best fighting for a playoff spot next year..
we did just enough to keep the team afloat...the type of signings the team wouldve gotten killed for by the fans in the past...
what's worse is reading how we filled needs this offseason.........really? the rangers just created other holes while patching up old ones.....simply terrible...

It is a very decent price for him, I would have preferred it be a team option for a 2nd year. I'm just worried about the money for our RFAs might not be there next year.

Other than lacking an elite winger, what holes have we created?

Just how? They are moving on from the PrimaJaga era to a new era based on what is best for the team not Jags.
You forget that Zherdev scored more goals then any one on our team last year and played on a line with MANNY MALHOTRA for much of the year.
You forget that Dubinsky Dawes Callahan are all more experienced and now without having to cater to Jagr, Renney can slot players where they fit best, not finding a player for jags and throwing every one else wherever fits.
Not to mention our D just took a huge up grade. Mara, Malik, Backman and Tyuts gone. In Redden and Kalinin. With Rozy Girardi and Staal who again has another year under his belt after a outstanding rookie season, I dont see how you could say this team got worse.
Anisimov has the potential to make the team out of camp, and so does korpikoski. Both of which I am sure could add at least 15 goals and 30 points.
I didn't mean he had a problem with Renney, I'm just saying we play a very defensive-minded game in front of Henke (or we did the last two seasons), and Renney was Mr. Left-Wing Lock in Vancouver. And it's also probably the toughest division in the league, with four cup contenders and the Isles end up being pesky every year, so defense first kind of has to be the way you go about it.
Naslund-Gomez-Zherdev is an exciting thought, anyway.

Gotcha. The main issue with Naslund wasn't not wanting to play defense. But Vineault really stifled them offensively. And it didn't help that there was no one for Naslund to play with.
The positive though is that Naslund's defense has vastly improved from before.
I like the signing alot more then. Better 8 than 9 million. This team got ALOT Younger and some people are saying we are going backwards? weird.
We've just got a lot of eternal pessimists here. I can't blame then, that trait is inherent in many long time Rangers fans. But still, the team looks good to me on paper, so I'm excited to see how this plays out for us.
Personally I have to laugh at some of you guys who suggest this team is taking a step back. While I can agree that the losing Jagr does hurt, it is limited. Jagr was all about being the star etc etc. This team now has a ton of young talent all of which can skate, pass, score in bunches. The sheer CREATIVITY that Naslund - Zherdev - Gomez can bring on a line together can/will be mind boggling, and this coming year I feel a lot of you guys will be very happy with the direction Sather has taken.
I hate to put too fine a point on this, but Naslund represents at least a $2MM cap savings (if not $4MM after bonuses) over Jagr. 2nd year can easily be bought if need be.
