Westrum

Hey guys.

There are some rumours in switzerland that C Erik Westrum from Ambri-Piotta might join the Flames in summer.

He was our best scorer and won the scoring trophy in the league. We just re-signed him till 2012.

But still i don't think he's good enough for the nhl. He sure is a decent AHL-Player though.

Have u guys heard anything about the possible signing?

If he is signed by the Flames organization it will probably be for the AHL team. I don't know why he would leave Switzerland for the "A", however. It will be interesting to see how that develops.

Seems like he is commited to staying no? Like the others have said if he does sign with us it would probably be an ahl deal.

most players, at least the high-end AHLers, demand outclauses. maybe westrum was invited into the flames camp. he can try-out. he either works himself into a position where he could see NHL ice-time or he goes back to switzerland. this happened often in the past.

Sounds like a good deal to me, might as well give the guy a shot.

Hey guys

There are again rumours, that Westrum will sign with the Flames. The Ambri GM Jean-Jacques Aeschlimann confirmed today, that Westrum received a one-way-offer from an NHL team.

I don't know if it is the flames, but there are some sources who told me.

Very interesting. One-way offer part is particularly interesting. You say he's not NHL material?

I'd personally be surprised if we offered him a one way. The flames could use a veteran guy down in the minors and he seems like a guy that could fit that role. Don't know if he is good enough to be with the big club.

Erik Westrum a Center was Selected by the Phoenix Coyotes round 7 #187 overall 1998 NHL Entry Draft.

Played 15 games for the Phoenix Coyotes 2003/04
Played 10 games for the Minnesota Wilds 2005/06
Played 2 games for the Toronto Maple Leafs 2006/07
NHL Totals 27games 1goal 2assist 3points 22 PIM

I do not know much about Erik Westrum, from what people say about him he looks like he will be a great AHL player rather than an NHL player. Erik Westrum would probably fit on the fourth line for the Flames if he ever gets a chance to play as we have some good centers for the first three line Langkow (who will resign in my opinion), Conroy and Lombardi.

Erik total in the Swiss-A League

Ambri-Piotta(team) 50games 33goals 37assist 70points 102PIM

I think he would be better off playing in the Swiss-A league as he plays better their than in the NHL as most team want a center that can score which Erik has failed to show in 27 NHL games for three different teams. I do not know what most of you think but I would sign him for one-year and send him to Omaha to see how he plays. If he does well and can make the Flames team by season end then I may consider giving him a two year contract. If he does poorly in Omaha I would trade him before the season end to get a younger prospect player.

I would love to see a flames player not Krys Kolanos in the qc next year as a vet. We could use a guy to show Armstrong and some of these kids how to play and hopefully not an jackass like Kolanos. Dont get me wrong I missed one game at home all year in the qc and saw 8 road games this year in person. Kolanos just doesnt care about the team and fails to understand that a centre has to back check. Maybe Westrum can come in score some goals and help the young kids out.

Kolanos is done in QC, so you wont have to worry about him anymore. As for Westrum, If hes coming over i would think its for the NHL only, and if he doesn't make it he will go back to Europe. But you never know,he may have family here, and be fine with a stint in the "A".

I Liked Kolanos but he wasnt a team player and wouldnt play defence. I think it would be a good idea to get a vet with some scoring touch to help Hugo and John. I would like to see Cracknell get a whole year in the AHL to have McGill work with him on his defence and possibly make a shot at the NHL. Dont forget Robin Regher was in the ECHL too.

I'm not familiar with Regehr spending any time in the ECHL.

Were you possibly thinking of someone else?

As for Westrum, I think it's good that Sutter looks everywhere for NHL talent. I would be cautious throwing out 1-way contracts however. If it is indeed a two-way contract it may be a good depth signing and fill the mentor role as suggested in other posts.

If Westrum is just signing to be a AHL vet then why not just keep Stevenson around instead. Heck I'd rather give Stevenson a one way contract then Westrum. He was with us the last year and knows the organization so mind as well give him a shot.

why not both? QC was rubbish last year and improving that part of our franchise could be helpful when it comes to developing our youngsters...

Yea, this claim really confused me, at first I thought he might be referring to Richie Regehr, but even Richie never got a game in at the ECHL level.

Maybe English is not scoringmachine's first language? And I don't mean to be rude in saying that, just a possible explanation.

Nah, he isn't worth to give shot. I mean he's sweet for Switzerland and probably also in the AHL. But never ever this guy is good enough for the big league... Anyway: I don't think some one will sign him to a one-way-contract, even when the GM confirmed it.
