not even close, he was their captain and played most of the games he was healthy for

he was not a healthy scratch ever for the Flyers, but he was terrible for them down the stretch. At what dman have cost in FA this year I can see a lot of teams balking at paying him what he probably expects.

Reason why he hasn't signed:

He's still trying to figure out how to use his pager.

I'd like to see the Canucks make a pitch on him, I'd give him up to 3M, make one of our Dmen expandable, and possibly trade up for another top 6

Guy had two seperated shoulders, no wonder he's failing physicals right now.

You need a player like him on the team. Always leads by example, plays physical and gritty and is a great locker room guy and captain.

He was never really healthy all of last season and sometimes he surely hurt the team more than he helped while playing thru the injuries.

If healthy he can still be a player, but he certainly isn't the player he once was. He won't solve all problems of a defence but can be a piece of the puzzle.

I hope we can get him, he would lead our young defense and bring in some solid leadership there.

Not yet. Just some posters and a blogger who decided to mislead everyone. The poster is well known for it (did it twice yesterday with the Bouwmeester deal to Ottawa and the Smith signing) and yet his account remains open...

I could see Ottawa being interested, but thus far, no reputable source has indicated that it is done.

Same thing happened with Souray last season. Was asking for a lot of money and was willing to sit on his asking price for an extended period of time to see who would finally bite.

With that said, I would really like the Kings to sign him, even if we have to overpay. We really need at least one 20 minute NHL defenseman.

It is July 5th (only).

He ended the season banged up.

Smart people are careful with their money.

He will be signed.

Patience.

He's not a 20 minute NHL defensemen anymore. Past 15 minutes and ineffective is a kind word to describe his play.

I don't get it either. I don't see much difference between him and Brooks Orpik. A little in the way of speed, but he makes up for it in almost never taking stupid penalties, which Orpik does too often (hitting from behind and roughing, a lot).

And, of course, there's Orpik's penchant for hitting dirty, which I'm convinced must have had something to do with his ridiculous contract.

Whoever you heard from, you heard wrong from. Jason Smith was a healthy scratch once, and it was the last game of the season. You should probably do some research next time.

Quote from the Buffalo news says Smith may be close to a deal with Tampa.

Quote:
Regier said he’s happy with the team’s depth but didn’t discount further moves. Buffalo remains interested in free agent defenseman Jason Smith of Philadelphia, although Regier said he had not spoken to Smith’s agent Friday and that the player may be close to a deal with another team (possibly Tampa Bay).

See, if you were a carpenter, you could fix those instead of going to the next town and wasting your money on buying new ones. That's money that could have been spent on food or amunition.

ammunition=food

smith is still a great player, but he's only great at things he's specialized for. he's a great leader, a veteran presence, and a team builder. he is not an exceptional talent anymore, but he's going to find a team and make it better, of that i have no doubt.
