Why exactly? What makes Vermette so bad in your opinion? Curious

Vermette is awesome, its Eklund that is bad. Go research his predictions, you will see if he says given player is going somewhere, he's probably going somewhere else. Basic HF.

On topic vermette would be awesome here. Don't know what it would take to get him though...

me too... but unless Sutter can convince Murray to take Warrener and Eriksson/Nilson in such a deal (or miraculously find other homes for them) we can't fit it under the cap

No Eriksson! Top 4 to Phaneuf, Regehr, Sarich and Giordano / Vandermeer and see which of Vandermeer or Giordano earn it... to land a top 2 line guy like Vermette is more than worth it

Giordano in the top 4? have you ever seen him play?... apparently not... even with vermette in the top 6 that would spell the end for all playoff hopes

As Vermette is arbitration-eligible, Sutter could trade for Vermette and ask him to go to arbitration, so that Sutter would have the opportunity to buy out some contracts to free up the cap space it would take to sign Vermette.

Thus said, you see it is not impossible but highly unlikely.

If anyone isn't familiar with Vermette, then I'll tell you a bit about him:

He's best described as a versatile 2nd line center. He's got plenty of other skill sets; he ranks 6th in face-off % in the NHL, he can create his own offense, he can park himself in front of the net for tip-ins or second chances, he's got great speed and is a good two way player, he's also one of Ottawa's best penalty killers. If he played a full season on the second line with some talented line mates, then he could probably post 65-75 points easily, and contribute in other areas as well.

He's also been relegated to the third line due to Ottawa's high talent offensive depth. Mike Fisher has been generally assumed to be the guy who will take Ottawa's 2nd line center role because of the contract he signed lately which in some ways leaves Vermette as the odd man out. The only reason why Ottawa doesn't want him is that Ottawa has very youthful and inexperienced defense men in our bottom 6 pairings. We're more than happy to sacrifice scoring depth if we were able to acquire a good Top 4 defenseman for Vermette. If we're unable to make a good deal, it's quite likely we'll end up keeping both of our RFA's.

Naturally Phaneuf is out, and the only guy I'd be interested is Aucoin, but he's a UFA next season. I'm not entirely sure that Calgary has that much defensive depth to spare so I'm not entirely sure that this rumor has legs.

Thanks for that, Vermette sounds great. I heard he must file for arbitration by today (5th). Any word if that has been done? If a guy like Aucoin would be traded Calgary would likely need to bring in another D man.... they have Phaneuf, Regehr, Sarich yet there seems to be some doubt if a guy like Gio opr VAndermeer can be top 4 yet... would be great to see Vermette on the second line though.

Vermette would have to take the Flames to arbitration for the Flames to get the 2nd buyout period... unless the flames send 2 players to arbitration... and since they signed Bourque thats not happening... so unless Sutter is planning on trading for 2 arbitration eligible RFAs it is impossible
