Just wait until Nikolai Kulemin gets here. I can't count how many times I've already seen his name spelled "Kulimen" or all manner of other things.

While we're venting our spelling- and grammar-related pet peeves, I'm appalled at the inability of posters on HFboards to use the subjunctive mood. This is what's used to indicate a wish or a state of affairs contrary to fact.

For example, it's not "If Maurice Richard doesn't attack that linesman, he wins the Art Ross that season."

It's "If Maurice Richard hadn't attacked that linesman, he would have won the Art Ross that season."

Why are people phrasing this as a present-tense conditional? This is in the past. Barring a trip in a time machine, there's no way to prevent Maurice Richard from punching that linesman out.

It's not "If Lindros doesn't get all those concussions, he's in the Hall of Fame." He did. It's "If Lindros hadn't gotten all those concussions, he'd be in the Hall of Fame."

It's not "If I'm Alexandre Daigle, I actually apply my talent." You aren't. It's "If I were Alexandre Daigle, I'd actually apply my talent."

It's not "What if McSorley doesn't get called for the illegal stick in the '93 finals?" He did. It's "What if McSorley hadn't been called for the illegal stick in the '93 finals?"

People seem to have picked up this sloppy habit from listening to sportscasters. Stop listening to sportscasters and go listen to your English teacher.

Hangin' in the Jays thread?

My own issue is not spelling, generally, but typing too fast and not taking enough time to review before clicking "submit".

It's Alexei Ponikarovsky, not Ponikarovski. You use a ''Y'' at the end, not a ''I''

It's Bryan McCabe, not Brian McCabe. You use a ''Y'' in his first name, not an ''I''.

It's Doug Gilmour, not Doug Gilmore. This isn't Happy Gilmore with Adam Sandler folks, this is Doug Gilmour.

It's Anton Stralman, not Anton Strahman. It'll come around eventually.

It's Tomas Kaberle, not Thomas Kaberle. He's been on the Leafs for like over 10 years and is one of the top defenseman in the NHL. Spell his name right for pete's sake.

It's Jiri Tlusty, not Jiri Tluslty. And yes, he will send you naked pictures of himself through Facebook. I recommended you don't ask.

It's Nik Antropov, not Nik Andropov. Jesus people.

It's Wendel Clark, not Wendel Clarke. Stop adding the ''e'' at the end of his name, this is CLARK we're talking about.

Its Carlo Colaiacovo, not Carlo whateveryoutypeinsteadovo.

That is all. I'm going to head outside now.
And I thought I was insufferably pedantic!

Can't you edit the filter for that?

I remember long time ago I made a forum for a something and I was able to pick the filters.. Instead of turning cuss words into stars it'd let me pick..

And vbulletin is like the best board software, I'm pretty we can for Stall to Staal.

You think people are dumb here? At least they manage to get to the right site. Head over to HFBoreds and you'll see where the real morons hang out.

Just because someone can spell or use proper punctuation does not mean there more knowledgeable then someone who doesn't. Besides if you can make out what there saying what is the big deal? I personally find it quite childish when people argue over spelling, or mock someone for spelling. If You know what the basics of the statements or arguments are why on earth try and poke fun or be mean because they spell something wrong.

It's just a fact of life that people take you and your ideas more seriously if you take care to appear like a literate and careful thinker, though. Presentation is important.

.

I don't really care about spelling. Having said that, it's very tough for me to take anyone seriously that can't spell a player's name correctly. If you don't know how to spell his name, how can I assume that you've watched or read enough to know anything about his game?

Two years of Jeff Oneil drove me nuts.

Nieuwendyk used to get bastardized pretty badly. People used to come up with some pretty interesting ways to spell Czerkawski, too.

If you bother to correct anyone on the English spelling of a Slavic name then you're basically a moron. Even those originally spelled in Latin script will have accents with no equivalents in English.

Well, you're not really a moron if you insist on spelling it the way the player himself anglicizes it, of course.
