Jackson: Leafs ''pretty close'' to deal with Stajan

Quote:
As 15 National Hockey Leaguers filed for salary arbitration yesterday, restricted free agent Maple Leafs centre Matt Stajan is on the verge of a multi-year deal with the team.

"We're getting pretty close," assistant general manager Jeff Jackson said last night. "Matt is on holiday in Europe and we hope to have it settled when he gets back at the end of the week."

Stajan made $950,000 US last season and is looking for something between $1.6 million and $2 million a year.

That is good. Stajan is a handly player to have around. He may not be the greatest talent on the team but he is no slouch.

Don't sell Stajan short, he's a tremendous slouch.

Nah, he's gotta get less then Steen.

But then again, Ponikarovsky gets more then Antropov.

However Poni and Ant are JFJ contracts while Steen and Stajan will be Fletcher deals.

Not sure its fair to compare based on that fact.

Good to hear, I really like Stajan, he plays a great role on the team and brings a surprising amount of leadership for a relatively young player.

I'd give him the same deal as Steen.

Longer term if he wants, just less money.

TORONTO SUN: Lance Hornby reports RFA forward Matt Stajan is close to re-signing a multi-year deal with the Maple Leafs.

SPECTOR'S NOTE: Should be interesting to see how much Stajan is signed for. I'm guessing more than the $3 million per season the Leafs signed Niclas Hagman to last week.

lol I thought Spector actually knew a bit about hockey

He does seem to, but he also seems to have a huge chip on his shoulder when it comes to the Leafs. Whenever a Leafs rumour comes up, he either dismisses it immediately or finds a way to take a shot at the team.

Yeah that's pretty much why I stopped bothering to check his site out. Will be quick to shoot anything down that connects to the Leafs. Can be good if your interested in just about any other team.

Good to have Matty back on board for a few years. He's definitely still not finished developing. I'm interested to see what kind of impact, RW will have on him.

AS much as I don't like Ron Wilson I think he is the perfect guy to help Matt Stajan make the jump into the elite defensive forwards i nthe game.

I agree, if Wilson can't get that out of him, I dunno who can. His teams have always had those kinds of players develop pretty quickly. Torrey Mitchell came straight in from NCAA last year and took on a similar role, Jeff Halpern is another who came out of nowhere under Wilson to flourish in that role.

I say 4 years 7.2 Million would be fair.

No way Stajan gets more then Steen. He has done anything more then Steen to deserve a bigger contract.
