Finn's Corner: July's 2009 top 40 and 2010 top 30

2009 NHL Entry Draft
2009 has long been hailed to be one of the best drafts in National Hockey League history. Each country has sent atleast one blue-chip prospect into 2009 with hopes of creating the NHL's next elite. Swedish defender, Victor Hedman, fronts this fantastic draft class including Canadian phenom John Tavares, Finnish star Toni Rajala, Czech leader Tomas Vincour, Slovak scorer Richard Panik and speedy American Jordan Schroeder. 2009 is jam-packed full of talent with it's strenghts coming from the great offensive corps in the top 15. The defense is average for the draft (although the top 2 defenders combine for a height of more than 13') and goaltending is below average with Olivier Bellevance-Roy being the only goalie to crack my top 40. My sleeper for the draft is Jimmy Bubnick due to his superb shot and a possible break-out season and my player 'falling like a stone' is Toni Rajala if he fails to impress scouts soley upon talent and not stature. Late round gems in this draft include defender Sam Calabrese (U17 USNDTP), Devon MacAusland (Moncton Wildcats) and Steven Anthony (Saint John's Sea Dogs), all players that were hyped circa 2007.

2010 NHL Entry Draft
2010 is quickly becoming a very competative draft up top. Four future NHL players are vying for first overall, and all four are very capable. As for now, Taylor Hall reigns number one for my 2010 NHL draft list. Taylor Hall is the frontrunner of Finnish national sensation Teemu Pulkkinen, Russian offensive dynamo Kirill Kabanov and Canadian big-boy John McFarland. This extremely talented top four makes this draft one to remember, but the true product of this draft could be goaltenders. Maxime Clermont, Riku Harma, Johan Gustafsson and Ville Kolppanen are all very capable goaltenders heading into 2010, along with possible second rounder Kirill Brashkin.

Draft Grade- A

01. Taylor Hall, Left Wing, Windsor Spitfires OHL can
02. Teemu Pulkkinen, Right Wing, Jokerit Helsinki SM-Liiga fin
03. Kirill Kabanov, Left Wing, Spartak Moscava RSL rus

07. Mark Pysyk, Defense, Edmonton Oil Kings WHL can
08. Victor Ohman, Left Wing, Malmö Redhawks SEL swe
09. Quinton Howden, Left Wing, Moose Jaw Warriors WHL can
10. Mikael Granlund, Center, Kärpät Oulu SM-Liiga fin
11. Kevin Sundher, Center, Chilliwack Bruins WHL can
12. David Musil, Defense, Jihlava Dukla CEL cze
13. Maxime Clermont, Goaltender, Gatineau Olympiques QMJHL can

Awesome job Finn. I always enjoy your input. Right now I haven't seen any of those kids play yet so I can't comment.

Not to be a giant deuche, but could you put positions with the lists as well next time. Thanks. Keep up the good work.

As much as I like to read info about upcoming drafts, don't you think you overdo it just a bit when it comes to the 2009/2010 drafts Finn?

Is it a good idea to stock up on 09 picks in fantasy leagues?
And which guys will make the NHL right off the bat besides Hedman/Tavares?

Last I heard Louis LeBlanc was going to play in Omaha for the Lancers this upcoming season in the USHL, and planned to attend Harvard University, next fall. I remember reading that on the Crimson website a few months ago. Has something changed? Has he decided to play for Quebec, instead?

on this rating scale, what would you give the 05, 06, 07, 08 drafts? Just for comparison.

Can't say I really agree with this rankings. Nattinen and Kulikov are good examples, Kulikov hasn't done anything to rank him ahead of Ekman-Larsson, Rundblad, Erixon. Nattinen hasn't done much to rank him above Bjorklund, Klingberg, Carning. But there just can't be too much players from one country on early lists.

For 2010 I'm pretty sure Janos Hari and Adam Pettersson are TOP 30 at least. Kitsyn doesn't have anything aside from good size(6'2 185), which is nothing exeptional when you have players like Ohman(6'1 203) and Liljegren(6'4 210).

Though it's very early, and I don't know much about NA players.

Superb job. Thanks for putting in all that effort.

One thing I would disagree with is I think Merrill and Moffat should be higher for 2010.

For 2009, I would put Kadri above a couple of the centers ranked higher. But it's all a matter of opinoin.

No he hasn't. Finn has him at Quebec in every 09 draft thread he makes, despite people saying he's not playing there over and over again

Awesome job finn. Great lists! I have two question though. Is David Musil draft eligible for 2010? I thought he a 1993 born and wasn't eligible till 2011, but thats the second 2010 list I've seen him on. I also wanted ask about Quinton Howden for 2010? How good is that kid?
