Hitch extended

Per Puck Rakers: http://blog.dispatch.com/cbj/2008/07...xtension.shtml

3 year extension through 2011-2012. Official announcement today after camp.

I like this. It prevents concerns about a lame duck coach and it dovetails well with Howson's moves around Hitch type players.

Happy, happy, joy, joy

Hopefully he took less money so he could get better players.

Aren't coaching resignings about as irrelevant as NFL player resignings.

We all know if this team is junk by 2011 he'll be out of a job anyways

Otherwise... hooray...?!

Word.

I suspect some folks will get upset by this, but coaching contracts in any sport aren't worth the paper they're printed on.

Where else can he coach a team with a Civil War theme?

Hitch, obviously, liked the offseason moves.

No surprise, but I like the move. Training camp can't come too soon.

Good, now we don't have to hear about that storyline for a while. Nice to have a foundation in place for a while. Of course, that could all change.

Which is why its dumb to agree to pay him money even if he may not be around. I mean, we paid Doug to sit around his house complaining about Zherdev for a year--they could have paid half the people on this board and accomplished the same thing.

What this does is allow the Jackets to control the date of his departure for the next four years. If they want him - no one else can have him without him breaching his contract - a move he's not realistically going to do.

Of course they can fire him at any point and just pay off the rest of this contract, but the team holds all the power in that scenario.

The Blue Jackets TV section of the CBJ website says Hitchcock will be holding a LIVE press conference at 12:30 today.

yes, but this means the only way he is gone is if we stink. theres no chance for us to start to build a winner and him be taken by another team offering him a huge contract. this gives the CBJ all the control. it also provides stability which is very important when building a team.

It's a chance for people to complain that the new NHL has passed Hitch by.

I agree, good news.

A couple months ago, I was on the fence about extending him over the summer, but with the moves made in the past weeks, I am all for it. It's good to have not only a solid core of players but of coaching as well. Hitch not only transformed Nash and Zherdev, but seems to be working well with all of our players young and old. I'll be glad to have him around.

i respect the hell out of hitch though. glad to see him here. and glad that if in 2 years we still have the worst offense in the league we can still change direction

past that. if we did bring in another coach, with this roster. they would pull their hair out. this is a team that only a hitch could love

If people didn't "whine", I wonder what people who whine about the whining would post about.

Any dumber than refusing to extend a contract because you "may" fire him at some undetermined point in the future?

Seriously. You know how this business goes. No one operates like that.

If people didn't post things about topics that we're disproven with about 15 minutes of research, there would be no attempt on my part to disprove it.

Feel free to continue to complain about Hitch, Howson, and whatever thing you have cooked up today. I could care less if you or anyone else complains, I just comment on crap I don't agree with.

Seriously, is that all you have? It's not even original. I mean, now you complaing that if the team sucks Hitch might not make it through his contract. Congrats, you've just now defined every long term coaching contract ever signed.

Howson and the ownership like Hitch's direction and they locked him up. He doesn't count against the cap and it's not your money gone if it doesn't work out. Hitch wasn't likely to accept a one year deal (everyone wants some security), so it's really down to whether you like him or not.

All this "He hasn't done anything so why reward him" is a bunch of crap. You didn't think he would win the the team last year anyway.

hitch definatly desearved the contract. and the way the team has been constructed made it so he has to be the coach for the next 2 years

I agree that this points to Hitch liking the direction, which makes me happy. Now we have to hope that the direction is the right one.
