Not really surprised.

I fail to see how this is a trade rumor or Free Agent Talk.

Yes, but we were told by Edmonton fans that it wouldn't be a problem there

nor am i, He had only 1 really good game last year where he stood out, it was against his old team, the flyers in the second game of season, all downhill from the there. Not to mention, he took himself out of the lineup for the most important game of the season, in which we were fighting for a playoff spot. His work ethic was awful, and on an squad led by moreau, that's not good enough. Injuries are one thing, but this guy got injured just from breathing, he's made of glass.

If you hear the interview it really doesn't come across as negative towards Pitkanen as when you just read it. He was basically just saying he was a hard guy to get to know because he was so quiet.

I dunno, Philly knew he was dysfunctional, we found out he was dysfunctional.

I'm sure carolina fans don't want to hear it and see what happens.

This kid really does sound dysfunctional, for God's sake he lived in a hotel with his mother the whole time he was in Edmonton.

A lot of canes fans are saying having his friend and fellow countryman Ruutu on the team will help him but iirc Kapanen was pretty damn sick of him in Philly. I can only hope they're that good of friends and he'll feel comfortable there.

People talk about why trades happen for pages on here. This is new incite to a trade that happens. If you don't like it don't read it.

And yeah I don't know where JoniE came from.

Ah yes. Team chemistry. Personalities.

Intangibles (there are others) that are nearly always overlooked by those who evaluate players, trades and teams based SOLELY on stat sheets.

They matter.

He lived with Kappy for most if not all of his time here and wasn't able to pick up the language or develop the ability to communicate with teammates on or off the ice. And that's with Kappy being a VERY social guy.

They also brought in Kukkonen who was his old teammate in Finland and that didn't seem to help much either.

I hope for the Canes sake that he gets over this stuff because it's a ridiculous waste of talent.

Yes I know, he's screwed up but I hate when people talk about possible issues that are not from pure social issues. He could have some real problems.

Well that's what makes it a good trade for the Oilers this year and a bad one for them last year.

It's not my issue if he's got real mental problems. It's his and he should get real help if he needs it.

I don't think the Pitkanen deal was every about the money. Kevin Lowe specifically went out and acquired a veteran defenceman making more money than Pitkanen (Visnovsky) so it wasn't like Pitkanen couldn't fit into Edmonton's salary structure. This was a hockey trade from the start and Kevin Lowe obviously felt he could make his team better by replacing Pitkanen with Visnovsky and consequently shipping off Pitkanen for a forward.

Will Cole sign an extension to even out the trade? Joni has problems but he also has an extension, talent and youth on his side. As of right now this trade stinks for the Oilers.

Lowe needs to get Cole for more than 1 year.

I doubt it.

He should be a filler for Hossa or Gaborick

He he could just be struggling to fit into a north american lifestyle... or maybe he's just uber shy... being introverted isn't always a bad thing or the sign of something more serious... why cant a person who likes to keep to himself be good at hockey?

You win a deal like this by getting a guy off your team who you could never win with if you need to rely on him in any kind of real way.

Obviously it's way better if Cole gets extended, but it's still a win in my book.

A little top 6 cushion while Gagner, Cogliano and Nilsson develop isn't a bad thing. I wouldn't be surprised if all 3 are out producing Cole in 09/10. His 4M salary will probably be better served going towards Gagner and Cogliano's extensions.
