Captain said: "He was not a team guy"

For the 2nd straight off-season, Kevin Lowe dealt a player that was acquired in a significant trade and spent only 1 year with the team. Last summer it was Joffrey Lupul; this summer, Joni Pitkanen. The Oilers were initially high on Pitkanen's skill, but were unable to attain a solid level of comfort with him. From a players perspective, Moreau feels it was an obvious mismatch. "He wasn't a very outgoing person," Moreau explains. "He just wasn't a good fit; he didn't fit in with the players or the coaches like we thought he would. Hopefully things work out better for him in a different place.

Do you have a link or a reference to an interview that this quote originates from?

I never thought Pitkanen would ever last in Edmonton, he just doesn't seem like the type who is willing to be coached.

The same was said of Joe Murphy when he was an Oiler, but he still managed to have a couple of excellent seasons in Edmonton and a pretty solid NHL career overall.

If the reason Pitkanen was dealt is that he "wasn't a very outgoing person," we've got a problem.

Players rarely speak really candidly in the media about what they really think. "Doesn't fit in with the team" is code words for selfish.
Horc danced around the same question in an interview on 1260 today.

Team chemistry is a critical element of a successful team.

And that is why Boys on the bus was very famous, they were skilled, young and was good buddies both on and off the ice. Look at Joe Murphy or Jimmy Carson, they did not have good career after leaving the oilers.

Well I think Moreau was trying to be nice, read between the lines, no body just says stuff like that. Joni has issues.

On the contrary. I view this summer as a cleaning of the dressing room.

People who needed hand-holding, looking after, or the team had to worry about what they were up to got moved. No more problem children. I am not surprised, as it is a trend in executive circles to only employ desirable personalities and to discard people who can't play on a team or have other malfunctions. IOW, I would bet $1000.00 that this came from Katz.

I say this as a fan of Stoll.

Just a note that some might not know but Joni left the locker room first after almost ever home game. He never talked to anyone.

Joni can't talk.

Little hooked on phonics and he'd have been the most popular guy around.

At least we won't have to hear 4,000 Pitkanen trade rumours over the next year.

Add to all this that he never stood up for a teamate on the ice and that his ex-teamates in Philly weren't sad to see him leave either. The guy has his own agenda. Good riddance.

Glad to see Cole come to the Oilers. He'll be a fan favourite in no-time. Guaranteed.

Look at Smid, he is a perfect example of a team player. I have seen that Smid played hacky sack with Sam, Cogs, Brodz before the game or after game at rexall place. His English is not that perfect, yet he finds a way to bond with his teammates.

How would Ethan "I hate milk" Moreau know anything about the Edmonton Oilers team of last year?

Pitkanen mentioned in an interview just after being traded that he was excited to go to Carolina in large part due to the fact that Tuomo Ruutu is there and is one of his best friends. Hopefully having a good friend on the team will help him to fit in a little better. Either way, I don't doubt he's going to tear it up in Carolina next year, and for years to come.

I just wonder which team Pitkanen will be dealt to next summer once the 'Canes see how little character he has.

I listened to that interview early this evening and it was strange to hear Moreau say that. MacT said the same thing. I always knew Joni was quiet but first with Eric Desjardins blasting him after Philly traded him to us and then this, something definately is up with Pitkanen. Doesn't seem like a team player at all.
