Trading Deadline, How do you feel!?

How do you feel about moving forward OR delay the current trading deadline of March 8th. OR add a new deadline and make it the first "free-trade" deadline in Feb, and "conditional trade" depending on the issues of clearing waiver and etc deadline in March.

Please state your reasons, what are the pros and cons?

I'd like to see the deadline to move up to around the 3rd week of Febuary. This way, it gives the traded player some time to get to know the system/one another and prevents a lot of "rich" teams to escalate the asking price for some of these players. GMs then would have to do better scouting to get what they want.

But if deadline is moved forward and if there are good 25 games left, and if someone gets injured, then it would be much harder to GMs to address the hole created by the injured player.

I think the deadline should be moved up, not mid-season like the MLB has it, but about the same as the NBA.

The current date is not bad. It allows teams who have fallen out of the playoff picture a chance to unload players who they may lose for nothing at the end of the year (UFAs).

I think that if there is a salary cap, you may see the deadline moved farther back for exactly the reason I just stated.

Another problem of an earlier deadline... the earlier you go the fewer sellers you have (as more teams still think they've got a shot). And the more cases of seeing 'buyers' snap up available talent and fade away (see the Rangers last year). I like to think that, the later the deadline, the more likely it is that these players are moving from playoff-missers onto playoff-makers.

10 sellers, 20 buyers, 4 of them miss the playoffs: fine by me.

6 sellers, 24 buyers, 8 of them miss the playoffs: worse, as far as I'm concerned.

It's week 6 in the NFL if I'm not mistaken. That's insane. I don't think anyone was moved at the deadline. Big talk about big deals but nothing escalated. Now, in NHL, that's another story. I wait all year for the deadline day. It's perfect where it is. If it's earlier, less teams make the moves, if it's later, the moves will be scattered between about this time and whenever it is. I love the excitement of it all at once.

I agree with the school thing. Maybe move it to a Saturday or something. Or March break is good.

How often are trades not involving picks done in the NFL though? Can't really compare, the last time the Steelers acquired a player via trade was Jerome Bettis in 1996 and we sent draft picks to St. Louis for him...

The trading deadline is fine in the NHL for the reasons that tmg mentioned.
