I had braces for 2 years for my overbite. I never wore the headgear like I was supposed to and I rarely used the rubber bands and everything turned out fine
I had braces for 6 or 7 years and in about year 3 (during college) I had 7 dental implants put in as I was missing some adult teeth. Needless to say, fun fun. Brace, surgeries and a bone graft. I don't wish it upon anybody and I also won't miss it.

I had braces from third grade through my junior year of high school. I had everything, headgear (nerd alert!), the RPE thing, braces, a different type of headgear (nerd alert!), I still have something in my mouth on my bottom front teeth glued to the back of them to keep them in place.
The teeth look good now, but man, what a painful bunch of years that was.
i have that too it's just a piece of wire glued to 4 teeth on the bottom...they say it will stay in forever.lol
Had my braces on for a year and a half. I have had them off for more then 10 years now and my best advice to you is wear your retainer. I still put mine in as I sleep at night a few nights a month as my teeth do try to move back to their old position. Your teeth will take a while to be less sensitive.
I had mine for about 3 and a half years. I didn't really care if my teeth were as perfect as they could get, I just wanted those ****ers off. They were pretty much about to fall off anyway since I didn't go to the orthodontist for like 9 months prior to getting them off.
I have 2 fangs in the top row, got asked if I wanted to put bracers when i was like 12, didn't want to cos i was scared as hell of everything to do with dentists, and now i really regret that.
I have to hold some kind of **** up record for braces. Had them for nearly 7 years, got them the summer before my freshman year of HS. I had them all through HS and my first three years of College. I finally got them off in March of this year.
I had orthodonture for a total of 8 years (probably about 6 years of which were spent with braces and the other 2 with a retainer). Let's just say I had a very unique case and received basically every kind of treatment method. I got started when I was 7 (didn't get them off until I was 15, at the beginning of 10th grade) and going into 2nd grade; my orthodontist said if I'd started any later, he'd have had to perform jaw surgery (which entailed breaking my jaw so he could then realign it) BEFORE starting any of the actual orthodonture. Apparently, I was somewhat of his pet project. In fact, I was told he's lectured about my case before to dental/orthdonture students, but I always thought that was maybe a bit of an exaggeration.
Before the orthodonture, my mouth/teeth looked like Bugs Bunny's, and that might be an understatement. I guess it's my claim to fame around home.
