04-05 Season: What happens?

What do you think would have happened if the 04-05 season had not been locked out?

(Just for the sake of simplicity, we are assuming that the rules match with post-lockout rules)

TBL would've been good. As would Calgary. I would suspect that Philadelphia would've gone for broke, and maybe done it. Colorado would've still been a good club. Devils would've been right there, of course. Ottawa would have another shot to buck that underachiever label, with Hasek a year younger.

Any of those clubs would've been my odds-on favourites.

Dallas would have lost in the first round to Colorado in 5 games.

Messier Doesn't retire, him & Jagr lead the Rangers back to the Finals.

Hawks finish dead last and win lotto!

Hawks select C Sydney Crosby

And i am glad that didn't happen. I prefer Toews + Kane over Crosby

Just my opinion and i like Toews & Kane a lot but Sydney Crosby is probably a generation player that comes along very seldom and is worth more than those two with ease.

Uhhh I'll take what he's having.

I'd much rather take Crosby + Malkin over Toews + Kane

BTW, Blues wouldn't have trade Pronger and would have kept Demitra. Wouldn't have gotten Erik Johnson, no youth movement. Would still not win the cup for 50 years.

Devils would have been very good because Stevens would have stayed. Damnit.

Ducks bounce back after a very disappointing year. Fedorov, Prospal, and Giguere all have great seasons. Bryan Murray remains as GM, Babcock gets a contract extension, and we're still the Mighty Ducks (or maybe relocated?)

Or not...

Hawks wouldn't have had Malkin! So that isn't a fair comparision.

Would you have rather had

Barker- Crosby- ? (Not likely Toews) - ? (No chance at Kane)

or

Barker- Skille - Toews - Kane

I may sound like a homer but i will go with Option #2 anyday

Scott Niedermayer would have still been with the Devils, giving them a great shot at the Cup.

Furthermore, he would have most likely signed an extension during the season (Devils were offering max $ when he was an UFA). Therefore, Anaheim would not have won the Cup in 2007. Also, Lou wouldn't have signed McGillis and Malakov, so the team wouldn't have lost it's first round pick to dump Malakov last year.

Vancouver's old core (the west coast express, cloutier and jovocop) would've gotten it's last chance. After failing to win the cup (but getting farther than before), the rebuild would begin the following season. Instead of acquiring Roberto, we would've gone with a youth movement with no superstar being available at that point int ime. Only now would the team be returning to it's former glory (if you can even call it that). Personally, I'm glad things went they did otherwise I doubt we'd have Luongo in net right now.

The Leafs would have tried to get one more playoff run out of Roberts,Mogilny etc. If I remember correctley Belfour was hurt then, so we would have had Tellqvist starting in net. Injuries would be the deciding factor in making the playoffs or not. If they didn't make the playoffs, I think the rebuild we are seeing now in Toronto would have started as early as the 05/06 season( JFJ wanted to do it then, but wasn't allowed). If they did make the playoffs, I don't see them getting far with Belfour not being able to carry them out of the first round like 04 after his back issues.

Habs would have most likely been a low seed again, gotten a mid-level pick, and no Price.

The defence could have been:

Stevens - Rafalski
White - Niedermayer
Martin - Albelin/Hale

Detroit would have been in the mix too. But I dont think that team would have won anything, you never know though.

There's a good chance Stevens would have retired anyway. He had already missed the end of 2004 with post-concussion syndrome. But then again, he said he got used to the idea of staying home with his family during the lockout, so who knows? Niedermayer would have definitely still been on the team, however.

Wow. That's an excellent question. I think the landscape of the league would be completely different if the lockout hadn't happened.

The Rangers would likely still have the same management style and be a bottom feeder every year.

Andreas Lilja would've been a Predator instead of a Red Wing.

Paul Kariya would've likely never signed with Nashville, nor would Jason Arnott or JP Dumont.

Derian Hatcher would still be an elite defenseman. (If the old rules were still in place.)

Khabibulin would've stayed with the Bolts.

Mike Milbury might still be the GM of the Islanders.

The Penguins might not have Crosby and/or Malkin (it's a long shot because they were by far the worst team in the league, but the possibility still existed).

There's a very good possibility multiple franchises would have relocated or folded. I'm thinking mainly of Nashville, Atlanta, Carolina (they were in pretty rough shape before the Cup run, IIRC), Florida and Buffalo.

Would St. Louis still have had the ownership change and accompanying mass exodus?

And I depending on what all went down in free agency, I think Tampa could've repeated at least as Eastern Conference champs.
