Johan Holmqvist signs with Frölunda Indians (SEL)

Former Rangers, Tampa Bay and Dallas Stars goalie Johan Holmqvist has decided to sign with Frölunda Indians according to swedish newspaper aftonbladet. According to the same source it's a 2-year deal. However, Mats Ahdrian, general manager for Frölunda dosen't want to confirm anything yet but says "We have come far in the negotiation process and I think Johan will play for us this winter".

This would mean Holmqvist would join home-returning Ulf Dahlén (former Dallas as well) who is going to coach the Indians this season, Stanley Cup-winner Joe Dipenta and former NHL-player Andreas Karlsson.

Not so far, in fact Johan hasn't even been reached for a comment.

Not all that surprising. He really struggled with Tampa and even with Dallas.

I think it is surprising. Frölunda already have a starting goalie in Ari Ahonen. I think that either Ahonen will leave the team now due to not enough playing time or the team will suffer by having two #1 goalies.

Frölunda fans would like to think it's going to be like when Fredrik Norrena and Henrik Lundqvist was the goalies but there is a big difference. Lundqvist was a youngplayer that never was meant to be that good yet.

This time they have two 30 year old goalies that is used to stand a majority of the games. I think it's bound to crash but maybe it's just a rival supporters wish..

I think Holmqvist, after his poor time last season should go in with an open mind knowing he has to prove his worth again in any league. Best of luck to him.

Ahonen isn't consistent enough to be a full-out starter on a strong team.

I fully agree, but I don't think he is willing to take a step back and maybe at best play 20 games.

I think he still dreams of the NHL for some odd reason. So I do also think that he'd want his contract to be nullified, to go to showcase his skills somewhere else.

Not at the age of 31... Holmqvist will not be going back to NHL/AHL now if he actually sign the contract with Frölunda. There is simply too many good young goalies that would be cheaper to bring into the rosters than signing an ageing Swedish goalie.

I think the Lightning deserve a little credit for going out and finding two passable goalies in Norrena and Holmqvist after letting Khabibulin walk. They'd probably have been better off rotating those two guys than trading Norrena and Modin for Denis.

There just aren't very many goalie spots open in the NHL these days.

He wasn't good enough to be a starting goalie, as simple as that it is, maybe he could served as a decent back-up but then again I think he prefers to be a starter in SEL, as few teams, if none, would given him the chance in NHL.

He was never really given the chance in Dallas. He appeared in only 2 games with Dallas.

That's what they want to market them self as, I never heard a fan refer to the team as the Indians.

Can't say I'm said to see him go. Carolina always made this guy look like a Vezina winner. It was ridiculous.
