OT - HNIC gong show continues

Not only is "Mad" Milbury is their newest addition,

http://www.cbc.ca/sports/hockey/stor...bury-hnic.html

but has anyone been following the Hockey Anthem Challenge?

http://anthemchallenge.cbc.ca/

The most memorable one on there is Hockey Scores, which is really quite saddening. The rest are terrible pieces of dreck. If any of those up there now end up winning, HNIC is going to end up a lot of doo-doo on their face. Or is it more doo-doo? Personally, I hope Hockey Scores somehow makes it onto TV. It would be very fitting.

Wow CBC acquired a loud mouth no nothing former Boston Bruin who failed in the N.H.L and had to become a broadcaster.

That sounds so familiar......

Now all they need is to hire another Ken Doll looking wimp to be his sidekick and CBC's master plan is complete.

Well, Hockey Scores came out of a thread created on a fairly popular message board titled "help screw up canadian TV!". It now has the full force of the internet behind it

HNIC management need no help to screw things up.

The fact that Hockey Scores is so prominent is partially the management's responsibility. Not only for failing to renew the original theme song, but also for actually thinking a "challenge" was a good idea for getting a new one. Their thought was to generate publicity, but I think it's all having a negative effect on HNIC. They could have just spent the money on on a contract with a real composer.

Well, especially considerin we're only a year removed from the hype surrounding All-Star defenceman Rory Fitzpatrick. Apparently nobody remembered that putting a vote on the internet would become a race to absurdity

Was it a race to absurdity... or was it an absurd race?

I just heard Mad Mike on 1260 . Pretty entertaining interview , albeit a short one .
He took a few shots at Gillis , calling him the most out of shape first rounder he's ever seen ( which shocked me since I didn't know Gillis had been a player never mind a first rounder ) , and one of the laziest hockey players ever . Sounds like Gillis was pretty free with his criticism of Mike's " achievements " as a GM . Milbury mentioned how he was " looking forward to seeing the genius ( Gillis ) at work " out in whale country . He threw a few bouquets Lowe's way , saying he was assembling a really good team that was going to win a lot of games . Barry Melrose was on the receiving end of a few pointed remarks as well .

The guys on the show were saying that they figure Milbury is the eventual replacement for Don Cherry . Don't know about that ... personally I always thought the aforementioned Barry Melrose was the natural for that job .

EDIT - No single song has ever captured the Canadian love of hockey like Big League by Tom Cochrane . Too depressing to ever be chosen as a theme song for anything , but as a Canadian kid who was out on the ponds from dawn till dark every chance I had , that song still gives me shivers .

Agreed. Classic hockey tune and needs to be re-introduced to the league once again. Haven't heard it since the Whalers left Hartford.

Then all the small details throughout the song, like the baby, the cat, and the sheep, it reminds me how hockey is the kind of game that brings a family together, and families almost always include a baby, cat, or sheep. That was very clever on your part.

Honestly looks like HNIC is going the way of Monday Night Football on ABC.

Went from being grade A to being a lousy 2nd rate ESPN presentation.

I'll swim against the current. I love the Milbury signing by HNIC. The guy is a straight shooter and doesn't pull any punches. He will provide a breath of fresh air for the stagnating HNIC team. Can't wait for Mad Mike to lay down the hammer.

Great move by CBC.

I don't know about you, but I never considered HNIC or even anything on CBC to be 'grade A'.

I am going to wait for the day they are forced to cancel the anthem challenge. Either way, CBC is going down. The over-bloated inefficient, sub-standard backwards beast will hopefully be put to sleep and perhaps a new age of non-crap CBC will emerge.

The Nature of Things, is grade A, so is The Hour. I am sure their coverage of curling is some of the best (only?) in the world.

not pull any punches
to speak in an honest way without trying to be kind. This man doesn't pull any punches. I wouldn't like to get into an argument with him
See also: any, pull, punch

My point is Milbury is not afraid to offend anybody. He will be entertaining, erratic and controversial. All good when it comes to bringing some edge to this game's generally bland coverage. The Mad One can speak from his perspective as a player and in management. Piss poor manager but hard nosed player and pretty smart college fella. Will make for very good tv imo.

No TSN is way better for Curling coverage... CBC now only does the finals of a tournament and maybe the semi's (RARELY). The Hour is great but how long until CTV brings that over and makes that their late night show; all you would have to do is bring George.

Correction. CBC no longer has curling finals rights to Brier, Scottie's, Ford Worlds when played in Canada, etc. TSN has those for the next 6 or so years.

Hey, that is a good song, yeah.

When you first said it, I was mistakenly thinking about that "Red Hot" Flames catastrophe and thought to myself "What da..?"
