I went over to pay my bills. But my landlord is foreign and I couldn't understand what he meant.

25 years old.

Put up 36 points, and averaged 25+ minutes a night (Only a select few defenseman at 4 million and under aerage that amount of ice time). Key cog on the Bruins defense corps and will continue to improve. Two UFA years bought.

A bit more than expected, but it's a solid deal and comparable to what other young defenseman are getting. I don't see why this is news on the Habs board, and I don't see many of you doing anything but bashing the deal because "it's a Bruin".

Get prepared for next year when your GM will have to hand out a lot of money to all your RFA's/UFA's. It happens to every team.

Although, on the open market, Wideman could have easily gotten over 4 million. It's a fine deal, but as I said before, some of you are way too biased to say anything good about news that is Bruins related.

1) You do realize we discuss every major deal on this board... especially the ones that occur in our own division..... we're the biggest team board here.

2) No one has bashed this deal yet because "he's a bruin".... we've said overpayment... I think thats what you said too with "a bit more than expected"

Considering the market, it's a good deal for the bruins. Hope Komi signs for the same money next year.

and it's pretty funny that a player like wideman is getting less money then ryder.

I hope it sets a target for Komisarek and Gainey. Something at $4 or 4.25M would be fantastic for Komisarek.

How is "a bit more than expected" = "overpayment"? I just thought he would get 3.5 - that was the number that was thrown around a lot. I think 3.9 is perfect - he'll be one of the best deals in Boston in a couple of years.

Isn't Komisarek an unrestricted free agent next season? That's the only problem - if he feels like testing the market, he could easily get 4.5-5 million. Especially if a team is in desperate need of a shutdown defenseman.

yes and only the ones who deserve it .

example , mark streit isnt a hab ...why? because he isnt worth 4.25 million

Huet isnt a hab...why? 5.6 million is about 1.5/2 million to much .

Souray? same deal

Bob will do the right thing,
the one who want to stay will stay . the ones who dont move along

a little ironic that the Bruin fan is complaining about his team being talked about here.

$5M is pretty much more than any shutdown defenseman has ever gotten. If a team offers that, it'll be the Islanders. I expect Komisarek to be locked up this offseason though.

This Wideman contract is a risk for Boston in my eyes. He's really only had one ''solid'' NHL season and now they are paying him UFA money when he still had 2 more RFA years to go.

As an example, Liles got 4.2 M per year for 4 years from Colorado just before July 1 to avoid UFA. Liles is not as complete as Wideman, but has a longer track record of NHL success.

In their situation, I probably would have given him a one year deal at around 3M to make him prove he is the player he was in 2007-08 and then try to re-sign him to the big long-term bucks next summer.

Maybe Vic is into being spanked... it would explain why he's always here looking for Bruins-bashing.

True, but the cap keeps going up, and the prices for defensemen keep going up. Hannan got 4.5 million last year - Komisarek can get just as much because of his age and how good he is.

I'm not complaining - I was just wondering why Wideman's contract would be news here. Beaker explained it perfectly.

A guy like Andrei Kostitsyn got paid 3,25M for three years in the current market. Wideman should not get a dime more than this. Value of a defenseman is greater than a forward's, but Andrei Kostitsyn is a better overall player than Wideman, and he's more likely to become a great impact player in the next three years than Wideman IMO.

No that much of a bad deal, but he's been overpaid by a few dollars.

After this just tell me that Kovalev's salary is not gonna be increased. Gainey has got to extend a couple of guys and FAST. The market value is increasing big time, it's gonna get disgusting. A couple of years ago, 4M was for 1st line forwards just after the lockout. Now, PP specialists are getting this.

Oh, right, about the topic at hand. I think this deal can't be considered overpayment in today's market, though under normal circumstances it is definitely too high.

He's getting 400 grand a year more than you thought.....times 4 years is 1.6 million dollars over your expectation. I guess it's a sign of the times when 1.5 million bucks is irrelevant. He's overpaid, but that's today's market. He's had one good year, and he's a 4 million dollar man.....
