Springfield Signs Robbie Bina to a 1 Year Deal (2-Way Contract)

As per the Grand Forks Herald.

A smaller, puck-moving defenseman, Bina was a fixture on the Sioux powerplay and has some slick offensive skills. Despite his size, he will play tough and won't back down from larger players. He has a good shot as well.

Edit, stupid Grand Forks Herald, it's there. You just have to go to sports to find it.

Looks like it is a two-way deal between the Falcons and Thunder. It seems that Bina and Chorney were linemates at the Fighting Sioux.

As a side note, Bina previously suffered a broken neck as a result of a hit from Geoff Paukovich.

Could he possibly play for the Oilers this year? Maybe a handful of games as the 7th or 8th Dman along with a guy like Roy or Chorney? Or is he purely a minor leauger? How old is he, and what is his upside? (I also can't get the link to work and have never heard of him b4).

Cheers to Guy Flaming for tipping us off over a day early on his blog. That is a nice pick up IMO.

Yes, it should be clarified that this is not an Oiler signing - the thread title is misleading.

No it should be clarified that it is an Oiler signing just a minor league deal that will not count against the 50 contracts. The OIlersigned him to their organization that makes it an \oiler signing

It was the Falcons that signed him, not the Oilers. It doesn't matter that the Oilers are the parent organization. If he can't play for the Oilers, he's not signed by them. He's an NHL unrestricted free agent.

To me this says that Chorney is expecting to be in Springfield for a year and no more. IMO this smells of a deal made by Bina and Chorney to play together (although obviously our scouts have seen a lot of both of them). Its no surprise to anyone that he'd be on the farm, but perhaps this hints at the organization's plan of development for Chorney. I could be reading too much into it too...

I think this is just a matter of semantics but I can tell you that those contracts are signed by and with the Oilers not Springfield. You are correct that they are NHL FREE AGENTS.

Bina is a tough, tough dude. It's hard to count him out after his comeback from that neck injury (caused by Geoff Paukovich, as mentioned by the article) but I don't expect him to be an NHL'er. I think he can be a solid AHL'er. He had a very good year last year.

He also helps his teammates in some unconventional ways...

Quote:
Bina is charged with trying to help Oshie and Toews escape a squad car outside a Grand Forks tavern Jan. 28 after police cited the sophomore forwards as minors in a bar. All three entered not guilty pleas in front of a judge earlier this month. Bartholomay and Henderson were cited at a Council Bluffs, Iowa, casino Feb. 4 for public intoxication.

Was this the incident that caused Greener to call Paukovich out last fall? There is no fighting in college hockey so Greene "took a number" and the 1st time since the hit that Greene and Paukovich were on the ice at the same time, Greener went at him and gave him a whoopin...(I'm assuming it was this hit, or Paukovich injured ANOTHER guy as well)
Man I love Greene...take a number and pay him back even though it was months after the fact and you both play for the same team

Ahhh...edited with link

As a Sioux fan just thought I would stop in and provide a little background on Bina for you guys. Bina is an above average graduate, but that is mainly due to the fact that he had to redshirt a year after breaking his neck. Yes, this is the incident that was previously mentioned when Paukovich checked Bina in the WCHA Final Five, and then a few years later Matt Greene (who was the Sioux captain at the time) called out Pauckovich.

Bina is definitly a character guy! Coming back from a broken neck should be evidence enough. Bina may be smaller but he is definitly not afraid of taking on guys twice his size, and generally he'll win the battle. He's hard working and dedicated and will be a great pick up for whichever team he spends the majority of the year with. He was defensive partners with Chorney, I believe for the majority of two years. Here are some clips that I found of him:

Perhaps his most memorable goal:
This was shorthanded by the way...

Goal vs Bemidji:
Vs. Bemidji

Playing with Toews makes it easy:
Vs. Minnesota
