OT - Official Cell Phone Thread (cause we don't need 6)

http://www.dailytech.com/article.aspx?newsid=10513

Something we should do against Videotron as well? They have probably made a ton of money off early termination fees, and from what I read before it is not a legal practice in Canada.

I know I had to pay 150.00 once when I had to terminate my contract with them. At the time I didn't know it wasn't allowed.

Dude if you have a contact for a group action against them, I'm totally in, they've done the same to me in the past (in 2004), although, I think it was 160$.

I don't even know how to go about doing that. I think a lawyer would need to be hired and we would have to gather up people against them first?

see this one against Videotron also: http://www.consommateur.qc.ca/union/...?recoursId=847

Are termination fees really illegal? Telus states a 20$ fee for every month left in the contract if you terminate it.

I don't know if it's illegal in Canada, but it seems it is in the states.

It's not in the federal laws, but in the Protection des consommateurs in Quebec laws, I think it is.

This is good news. I foolishly signed with them. They lie so much and tack on so many fees. My phone was supposed to be 45/mth or so, and it ends up being 90/mth every month. I hate them!

Anyone have a link? Fido's offering the same package but better than the one I signed with telus but at half the price. I still have 2 years with them though and I want to get out of that damn contract.

Don't really have time dude, but you won't have a hard time finding it, just go on the province of Quebec's website, follow the link to the office de la protection des consommateurs... and you can ask your questions from there or simply search their laws....

I said this because I heard it before on the show "la facture" or "J.E."... I don't remember which... Bell Canada and other companies were found guilty and paid the settlement to the consumer action groups.

You should call the "Fonds d'aide au recours collectif". This is a governmental organisation that has funds especially for class actions.

Grosso Modo, you submit your request, they will study the matter, and if they think you have a good point, they will fund you and then, you hire a lawyer and you try to get a class action certification!

Please tell me there is a class action suit aganist Telus & that these fees are illegal in Canada.

I was very unsatisifed with their service so I cancelled my contract.
They charged me $400.
I refuse to pay it so now I have a bad credit rating.
I cannot get a loan, a new credit card or increase my old credit card limit.

I refuse to pay this money on principle.

Bell charge 50% of the rest of your contract is that illegal to? How does this work, like we are not allowed to get out of are contract? Both party must go to the end?
If any buddy knows anything would be pretty cool.

I dont see how termination fees are illegal here. You get discounts when you sign a contract for a specifict lenght of time. The discount is based on the assurance you'll be a client for that period. I think it's normal for a company to charge you if you quit the contract. Not all the cases are like that. But those I have to say I dont have much problems with.

Depends on the reason, the company you signed a contract with also have obligations, if they don't fulfill them, you can break the contract with no penalty without any problems.

OT : Recommend me a cellphone (Rogers)

Hey guys...

I have a big decision to do in my life right now! I have to look for a cellphone!

Here's the criterias :

- Member of Rogers only
- Face platted board (no flip or slide)
- Under 250$
- Basic option (Bluetooth, Camera etc..)

I love Nokia as cellphone but this is not a obligation to recommend me one!

What would you recommend to me?

Although it is a slider I would certainly recommend the Nokia 5300... It allows you to put in about 500 songs if u have an sd chip and allows u to upload them from your computer... Has a nifty speaker feature, bluetooth.. a decent camera/video recorder and if your signing a 3 yr contract its about 50 bucks..

I know, but since he wants a 250$ cellphone, he won't get a 8gb or 16gb for that price.
