Let's Build Next Year's Team - Second Pairing Right Defenseman

Im sorta ripping off flylines yearly prospect post, and kinda building a twist around it. Were going to vote on the lines for next year. Im going to go position by position, and were going to have a vote for every single player, even the more obvious choices till we fill out an entire roster.

The assumptions here are the team carrying 2 goalies, 1 backup defenseman, and 2 backup forwards. The first few obvious prospects will also be listed in every vote, along with an "other" option. This is if you feel another player not listed is a better choice than any of the other players.

The Roster As It Stands Now:

Markus Naslund (52.83%) - Scotty Gomez (91.67%) - Nikolai Zherdev (78.02%)
Nigel Dawes - Chris Drury (54.48%) - Petr Prucha (40.91%)
Dan Fritsche (45.21%) - Brandon Dubinsky (93.15%) - Ryan Callahan (63.08%)
Freddy Sjostrom (56.52%) - Blair Betts (94.92%) - Aaron Voros (42.71%)
Colton Orr (58.18%)
Patrick Rissmiller (60.66%)

Marc Staal (59.22%) - Wade Redden (75.00%)
Michal Rozsival (66.67%)
- Second Pairing Right Defenseman
Third Pairing Left Defenseman - Third Pairing Right Defenseman
Backup Defenseman

Mara...there has to be a physical defenseman with Rozsival and not to mention Mara's left handed shot on the right and Rozy on the left with his right handed shot will provide a deadly combination for one timers from the point.

girardi is physical too, but i voted mara because i wanna give him a better opportunity than the third pairing, and i'd say he has a potentially higher upside than danny boy. i LOVE his shot and his puck moving ability. he's only a few years removed from a VERY good offensive season. i'd like to see if he can get that back...

Voted Mara because I'm not sure we're gonna be seeing a pairing w/ two right handed shots. Its hard to get a left-right pairing, so a right-right pairing might be a little silly.

Anyway, I can't help but feel like these polls have turned into a depth chart more than being reasonable lines...

Rozsival and Mara are both offensive defensemen, neither is particularly good in his own zone. Mara isn't terrible in his own end, but Girardi is surely better, especially in a role where he can focus on being the stay-at-home guy and doesn't have to try to provide offense. Also, I've noticed Mara tends to take a lot of penalties when he's trying to be that stay-at-home guy, it seems like he gets overzealous at times and ends up taking a penalty.

When Girardi tried to become more of an offensive defenseman last year, he contributed a decent amount, but his play in his own zone suffered significantly, IMO.

Girardi it is, with Mara - Kalinin being the obvious 3rd-pair. And I'm assuming that many of you will suggest someone from Hartford, like Potter, as the 7th defenseman, but I disagree vehemently. I think it's important that the young guys get to play, be it with the big club or in Hartford, they shouldn't be sitting in the press box. Therefore, I say keep Potter (and Sauer, and Sanguinetti) in Hartford, unless of course one of them actually beats out one of Mara/Kalinin for a spot at camp, in which case I'm all for one of them being on the 3rd pair.

My suspicion is there might be another depth defenseman signed prior to the start of the season, someone who can fill the role that Strudwick did for us last year, ready to step in if needed.

Not sure who is out there, but I'd think there'd be someone who can fill that role.
