LA has a low chance of getting in IMO. They are clearly rebuilding all the way around. They said as much when they hired their new coach. The bubble teams in the West to me are the Oilers, Phoenix, Nashville, and maybe Vancouver because of their goalie. But I think largely, the West is stacked with some pretty solid teams in the top 5. I wonder if Columbus will ever discover the New World of the Playoffs?

Honestly? None. They are rebuilding. Give them 3-4 years.

In no order:
Dallas
SJ
Det
Ana
Pho
Chi
Edm
Calgary

I think since there are only 6 games against divisional opponents this year the pacific division (the strongest division) will have 4 teams making it. Phoenix has looked impressive for a young team and I think they will make it this year.

The northwest is an odd division and I really don't know what will happen there. I have edmonton winning it because i thought they made a good push last year. IMO it is up for grabs. Vancouver will finish last...

Det and Chicago will make it from their division. Chicago lookes ready to make the playoffs with the emergance of Toews and Kane as bonafied NHLers. Campbell is a prissy boy, but it won't hurt them too badly.

Uh, no. Calgary will be competing for the division title. At worst, I think they finish around 7th.

1 - Detroit
2 - Dallas

4 - Anaheim
5 - San Jose
6 - Minnesota
7 - Chicago
8/9 - Nashville/Edmonton
10 - Phoenix
11 - Vancouver
12 - Colorado
13 - St. Louis
14 - Columbus
15 - LA

Move Edmonton in and Nashville out and that's about what I've got. I also think that the April 11, 2009 game between the Oilers and the Flames (Last game of the season for both clubs) could be the game that decides the division winner for the NW.

As far as the pacific being the strongest division, the NW had the highest combined point total last year in the Western Conference meaning that when the teams from the NW played outside their division they won more often than they lost. I'd contend that playing only 6 games within their division benefits the teams from the NW more than the teams from the Pacific who got to beat up on LA and Phoenix for 8 games each last year. I see 3 teams from the pacific, 3 teams from the NW and 2 teams from the central filling out the playoff competition in the West barring major injuries to any of the top 8 teams.

3 from the Central and only 1 from the NW?

While the Hawks have a very good shot, I don't see Nashville making it in. One of Calgary or Vancouver will take their place.

No place movement in the votes. I'm still surprised by Edmonton's strength and Colorado and Vancouver's weakness among voters.

Think again..

Phoenix were the best team in the Pacific with a 19-11 record.

You got me... however since that is the case it will be detrimental to Phoenix to play more games outside their division since 19-11-2 is not exactly proportional to 38-37-7.

I still contend that the NW division is at least as strong overall as the Pacific. Perhaps because LA is a bit of an anchor for that division. I don't think any division is enough stronger than the others for there to be 4 teams from 1 division in the playoffs. That only happens in the east.

302 VOTES
Looks like everyone has had a chance to vote. The Pacific is pretty tough with San Jose, Dallas, Anaheim, and the vote is Phoenix in 9th. I suspect if there is a surprise in the top 8, its probably going to be Colorado, Vancouver or Nashville, replacing one of Chicago, Minnesota or Edmonton. Hard for Phoenix to sneek in and 4 teams from the Pacific making the top 8. Vancouver would seem to have a good shot at breaking in just because the strength of their Division may be slightly weaker than others and they have a Vezina goalie that could steal a few games to get them in. To me, the team most likely to fall out of this top 8 is probably Minnesota.

Interesting that Dallas and SJ were a dead tie in the vote (Still a few days for a change and I will try and remember to run this poll in the same way near the end of the preseason.)

I went for Phoenix but after thinking about it, although I'm not buying their goaltending, Chicago's chances might be better just because of their division being soft (or conversely, because of Phoenix's division being hell).

I do feel that Phoenix is the better team of the two though.
