Kristopher Letang

What could possibly motivate the Pens to move Letang?

nothing..He don't have any value in the moment. Play very well but the Pens need all d-man they have

If they move Letang.. it's for an elite d-man.

Hmm... Letang is a pretty big part of the Pens' future plans, so I really don't expect him to be moved. In all honesty, that should be the end of this thread. However, since this is a hypothetical...

The Pens have a decent amount of puck moving, offensive defensemen. Gonchar is soon going to be on his way out, but there will still be Goligoski, Whitney, and Letang. This leaves room for one puck mover and one stay at home per line (ideally). If Letang were to be moved, it would need to be for either a stay at home, physical defenseman or a winger to play with Crosby.

Like I said earlier, they probably won't move Letang, but if they were, the player the Pens would get in return would probably need a cap friendly contract and at a reasonable age.

I don't think it'd have to be for another D at all, if the Pens move Letang it'd have to be for the one thing they're missing, a long-term option at wing for Sid. Considering Letang doesn't have the value to get anything good like that right now though without adding a lot, there really isn't any way he'd be getting dealt this year. Should he have a breakout season though and appear to be in a situation to command a 5 million dollar a year salary in 2 years he could get dealt in the 09-10 season, but I don't see how that's even possible. Most likely if Letang emerged that quickly and was that valuable the Pens would give greater consideration to moving Gonchar or Whitney.

Yeah, he is not going anywhere at this point. It makes no sense for them. Gonchar will be out in a few years, Letang will be a great guy to replace him on the point and has already shown he can play at this level with huge upside still. Plus, he is a right handed shot which is valuable and still being on his cheap entry level contract, there is absolutely no reason they could have to move him as of now.

He really doesn't have the value to return a roster player that we would need (long-term scoring winger). Well, at least by himself anyway. So it would probably be better to keep him.

Its been said before...his value isn't as high on the market as it is to the Penguins so there is no chance of him being moved without some team offering more than he is legitimately worth.

Thanks for your nice contributions to the topic.

Anyways, he's a lot more valuable than what they'll [Pens] get for him.

If we could get a player like Antoine Vermette for him then I'd move him, but no way would Ottawa make a deal like that.

He is pretty secure as a part of the Pens team that will be here for the long haul. I think he has the potential to be a very solid top 4 defenseman who is as good offensively as defensively.

I guess hypothetically if the Pens had to trade him, ideally I'd like someone in the Dustin Brown mold to play on Sid's wing.

good joke...Letang has much more value. He's way better than Whitney and much cheaper, too...he's our francise d-man..book it..if you saw his penalty shots this seaon, you know, that we'll not move him..

edit: what I would want: Kovalchuk, no joke, even if most will think that that's a joke.

I'm not advocating shopping Letang. I'm just saying I'd rather have Vermette if the choice were in front of me. Letang is a good player, but he hasn't done anything that would suggest he will be our franchise defenseman.

I saw his penalty shots, and I have no idea why you think we wouldn't move him based on that.

I feel Letang has upside not that far from Mike Green's and for that reason I think the Penguins should hang onto him.

Being good in the shootout doesn't make you a franchise defenseman. Ryan Whitney contributes to his team way more than Letang ever will. Personally I'd offer a 2nd rounder for him and no more.

If I was Ray Shero and Murray offered me Vermette straight up for Letang I would do that deal and run away laughing.

We all know up-and-coming puck moving D-men are worth elite snipers, who make 50 goals year-in, year-out.

Yikes, talk about delusional.
