I'm quite surprised actually. I know Montreal fans are quite hard on their players(see Brisebois) but cripes, he's their captain!

It's just disgusting. A few people make all Habs fans look bad. The Montreal media is awful as well.

Anyone who boos Koivu should be subject to public torture. Not too long ago he was a worldwide hero

Another nail to the coffin of the myth of the "knowledgeable" Montreal hockey fan.

Disgusting display.

If it continues I would expect another Brisebois-style speech from Gainey.

It's a tough city to play in. The captains rarely last there. I'm surprised Koivu has lasted this long considering he's never really brought any success to the team. I respect him for doing what he has done with the group of players he gets to lead though.

Spud is right though. A few people don't represent the entire fanbase. Sometimes at games, a few fans start something and the mob mentality takes over. The followers just follow.

It is certainly unnecessary and wrong in my opinion. But, is anyone really surprised after what happened with him and Ribeiro the other day? The fans in Montreal seem to always side with their hometown boy no matter what, and in this case obviously nothing has changed.

You're right a mob has the collective intelligence of the least intelligent of its participants. I can't believe some people actually planned to boo him though. It was not done spontaneously. People were writing about booing him on the RDS (the crappy french sister of TSN) talkbacks. What's even more disapointing is that others followed.

I'm sure they were just saying boo-urns...

Seriously, I'd blame the media before those fans. They're the ones trying to stir things up since the begining of the year with stupid comments like "Koivu looks unhappy, he doesn't talk to the young guys, he's jealous of Ribeiro , etc.), while elevating Ribeiro to the semi-god status. They have their new french-speaking rising star now. So this means war time. There cannot be two good playmaking centers in Montreal, Ribeiro must claim supremacy, all that crap...

But of course, the fact some naive and ignorant fans buy into this soap opera is nothing short of pathetic.

as a wings fan, we thank you for that.

if it wasnt for him, we wouldnt of won the cup. he was a HUGE part of our defense then. When we landed him, he really stabilized the wings on the blueline.

Umm it wasn't the Frenchies booing Breezy. RDS continually covered up for him and there are some Frenchies that want Briesbois as the captain. That's what it comes down to. I guarantee if Koivu was from Quebec and Ribiero a Euro RDS and the French would have an entirely different take.

When we had Murphy, I would also ask my dad why they would boo him, I couldnt understand it, I thought he was one of our better players...at least on D

How do you know who exactly in a crowd of 19,000+ is French or English..?

I don't think it's an issue based on that. Some Hab fans are just fickle and they will boo whoever. It's not about where they come from for them.

For having read numerous times French and English speaking fans talking about the issue (not just this one, but the whole Koivu VS Ribeiro debate) on various forums, I can ASSURE you it does make a difference. The language question in Quebec is something that has a grip on every aspect of life, including sports. There's a clear gap between english and french press, and therefore english and french fans. The Brisebois booing was supposedly the result of a nasty demolishing campaign by Jack Todd, an english writer, and to see the way the french press treats Koivu, questions his leadership, makes assumptions about his character, while over-protecting and praising Ribeiro, it definitelly created a hole between the french and english speaking fans. I'm bilingual, so I guess that means I hate/love them both equally.

Damn, are you serious?

I was trying to be optimistic in thinking that that's not what this is about..

Such a shame if what you say is true.

Well of course it's a generalization. I'm originally french speaking and I like Koivu alot. I see the manipulation going on in the media and the end result on fans and it pains me to no extent. It's not ALL french or english speaking fans who think this way, but the most moronic of the bunch (and sadly, like always, the ones who speak the loudest) do.

Were these fans that booed Saku Koivu the same ones that gave him a standing ovation for 8 minutes on his first game back after fighting cancer?

I think I'll agree with the fickle part.

Bipolarity is a disease rapidly spreading within the Habs fan base.
