Sundin Rumors Thread (Rumors with Links Only, Updated by Mods)
Since we apparently cant have a sundin rumors thread that doesn't degenerate into a pissing contest anymore, Marc and I have decided that we will update this sticky and locked thread with the latest rumor. You can PM us when a new story breaks and we'll update with the latest link.
That way people dont have to wade through the other thread that is a mess with the discussion of Canucks vs Habs.
Seeing how quickly TomPlex's thread degenerated into a piss on Lafleur and Roy fest, this is really the only solution tha I can think of. Its become a heated issue here, so this is what we'll do.
If you want to continue to debate the rumors the other Sundin thread will stay open.
I'm not going to mention the newspaper. Nor the columnist. This reputable hockey writer is based in Toronto. I just simply asked him (via e-mail) what's going on with the dragging courtship of Sundin. His response to me was as follows ...
Talked to his agent again today who says Mats is fishing in Lapland with his brothers and incommunicado. Decision expected around Aug 1 - Van and your Canadiens leading contenders, Toronto third. Rangers like him but have cap issues, Det is out after Hossa signing. That's primary sources and all I know for sure. Agent thinks he's playing next year but even that isn't a complete certainty have a good summer my vacation starts in 2 minutes just one more message to answer cheers.
... A wait and see situation. Sundin's decision will come when he finally has a clear mind. Then, and only then, will we know his motives. Which would be either monetary gain or playing for a successful team. His reputation as a "leader" is about to be tested.
YOUR MATS TODAY REPORT
Today in Sundin...I am being told more and more that Mats is going to return to the NHL and a source this morning told me that, "He will be Canadien by week's end, and the Habs know it. It is being kept quiet so the team can make the needed moves to clear cap space without teams being able to completely take advantage" http://www.hockeybuzz.com/blog.php?post_id=16215
Meanwhile, the Sundin situation is getting more and more complex with sources telling me that Montreal stills has the inner track but ANOTHER team that we have yet to talk about may indeed be getting into the game today or tomorrow.
Shortly after 1 am last evening a source informed me that he was hearing "major news" involving Mats Sundin was likely on its way in the next 48-72 hours. When I pressed the source he could tell me no more and told me "not to hang my hat on this, but he had heard it from 'pretty much as close to the situation as you can get' but that his source even told him that the situation continues to be very tenuous.
I truly get the sense that it is a two team race right now between the Habs and the Leafs.
That is not to say the Canucks and Rangers aren't still alive, but it truly feels as if, based on talking about Mats to WAY, WAY, WAY too many people..it is a two team race.
