Holy crap.

I was surfing around checking out price points and TigerDirect has a 9800GTX for $179 - $30 rebate = $149... that's insane.

Anyway, I'm just starting to research benchmarks and it looks like that the 9600GT is a good possibility just because it's low enough for my liking.... but I could see going after a 9800GT/GTX or HD4850 if the price is right.
Great to see you're having so much fun with the birthday gifts/money bro!

That's a damm fine price for a 9800GTX and don't confuse yourself with the 9800GT it's just a rebranded 8800GT.

I'm assuming you saw this: http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applicatio...815&CatId=3670

That's a damn good deal.

Yup, that's the one. I'm seriously considering pulling the trigger on it, but reading through comments there it's not the first time TigerDirect has had it really low (last time it was $179 with rebate a month ago) so it looks like a reoccuring price there; that means I have time to save my pennies.

As for the 9800GT - good to know. Nice to see nVidia up to it's old tricks... well, that just means I can expand the search for the cheaper 8800GT as it will still outperform a 9600GT.

It is annoying though how they do that...

I get the feeling it's a really shady attempt to trick some people into sidegrading from an 8800GT to a 9800GT, making them believe it's an upgrade through confusing nomenclature.

NVIDIA has just launched the new 9800 GT which is basically the old 8800 GT. So, they haven’t really launched a new product, rather, a new name. The renaming of cards is becoming a bit of a pain in the ass, but really there isn’t a whole lot we can do about it. The best thing we can do is help keep people educated so they don’t "upgrade" from an 8800 GT to a 9800 GT or an 8800 GS to a 9600 GSO.

Yeah, when I read your post and decided to google "8800gt 9800gt" I got quite a few posts from people asking if it was worthwhile to upgrade from one to the other. Luckily people explained how it was a sidegrade.

I would've stumbled upon it eventually, I'm pretty thorough when it comes to purchasing anything; but for those who just go by the number I could see a lot of disappointment after shelling out another $200 on a "new" card....

So I ended up with a 9600GT.

Didn't plan on it, but when I woke up this morning and saw one selling for $99 at FS (http://www.futureshop.ca/catalog/pro...0099595&catid=) even though it's listed at $129 in the flyer, I knew I had to run down and pick one up. Fits in with my cheapo philosophy perfectly.

Had to argue a bit at the store (it scanned at $129 ldo) but when they brought up the webpage they honoured the online price. Sweet!

A bit later I'll install it and see to what lengths I can overclock it.

That reminds me of the time I was buying a game at Futureshop and they tried to charge me the regular price and I had to force an employee too look at the online flyer.

The 9600GT is a decent card. It's performance is a little under that of the 8800GT but you should be fine with it especially at this price.

I lucked out on my card in the same way. I was just browsing a website for computer deals and they were having a surprise sale on 8800GT and I got mine for $100.

That was a sweet deal! Even now 8800GTs are rare to find under $130-140; FS is clearing them out this week at $149.

Edit: I'm downloading 3dmark06 to start my overclocking/stability testing (already have Rivatuner)... boy, that's a huge download.. 580Mb!

So it looks more than happy at 700 core, 1736 shader, 1000 memory - I can go higher on each one but I like leaving a buffer (and I don't really need to push at all).

11100 3dmark06 score... not too shabby at all.

Back to $129 on the web... must have been a mistake to list it online at $99 yesterday. Their mistake, my benefit!
