4th Line Center (Build OUR ideal Flyers depth chart)

Let's put together the 08-09 depth chart piece by piece, one at a time. DO NOT vote for who you THINK will be at each position...instead vote for who YOU yourself would put in each position. Dont vote in a player just because of a cap hit(Knuble, Jones), let's vote purely on who would be the best fit at each line. I think it will be interesting to see how close the popular opinion is to the actual depth chart.

We have our top 3 lines set now but who will be centering the 4th line grinders?

ps. Does anyone know what # Giroux will be wearing for sure?

Also if there is anyone you would like added to the list for potential 4th liners or 13th forward please post it.

#12 Simon Gagne - #48 Daniel Briere - #19 Scott Hartnell
#22 Mike Knuble - #18 Mike Richards - #15 Joffrey Lupul
#9 Scottie Upshall - #17 Jeff Carter - #56 Claude Giroux
4nd line Left Wing - 4nd line Center - 4nd line Right Wing
13th forward

1st pair Left D - 1st pair Right D
2nd Pair Left D - 2nd pair Right D
3rd pair Left D- 3rd pair Right D
7th Defenseman

Starting Goalie
Backup Goalie
Call up Goalie

Longshot to make the team

I think in 90% of the games this year where we're fully healthy, you're going to see a 4th line of Cote-Metro-Asham. The first call up almost definitely being Downie, and I'm hoping that we don't carry him with the big club and just let him play in the AHL until needed.

Matsumoto will definitely see some action this year when injuries strike as well.

Patience, we haven't gotten to the defense yet...or discussing our coach's "system." Or, as I like to call it, everyone start skating forward as fast as possible and we'll see what happens.

I'm pretty sure Giroux is going to wear 56. It's what he's been wearing the last two training camps, what he wore in his 2 game stint with the team, and it's his most desired #28 X2. And Metro for 4th line center.

He should just wear #28! It's not like Kukks number is important. "Scratched tonight #73 Lasse Kukkonen" is just as easy to announce.

Metro.

LOL, that's great. That's the best descrition of Stevens' style I've ever read. It usually takes me 3 sentances to say that. I think I'll make that my new sig.

Honestly, the cup finals is really where I noticed just how bad Stevens is. If you watched Detroit, their forwards CAME BACK to the dmen to get the puck from them while still in their own end, not sprint to neutral ice in hopes of a homerun pass like what we do. Unfortunately I don't see things changing much this year in our playing style. With all this talent we've assembled we are still going to have long stretches where we will struggle mightily. People will place the blame on individual players for "going cold" (Briere and Lupul bashing this off season) when in reality it's our "system" failing us. We just don't play defensively disciplined enough to be consistant night in, night out.

Metropolit is a good fourth line center. I think we'll have an even better 4th line than last year.

Metro has had a weird career, but I think he's good for 30-35 points given enough playing time. While he may or may not get close to those point totals playing for a Flyers team stacked on offense, it does mean that we aren't going to have a garbage 4th line center. I think Metro will surprise a lot of people by his competence.

Towards the end of last season Riley Cote was routinely keeping the puck in the offensive zone, drawing penalties, and doing what a regular 4th liner, not a goon, should be doing in the NHL. Cote's vast improvement paired with Metro, a center with some offensive skill and something left in the tank, should lead to us having a 4th line that is completely competent.

I don't see a rookie coming in and taking a number away from a guy who has paid his dues.

In acquiring Metro, it really seems to me that they were looking for a guy to take over 4th line center, that would also be able to handle 3rd line center duties well, if necessary. I think they feel there's a good chance they'll end up toying with Briere on the wing in the near future, and if and when that happens, they wanted to feel secure at 3rd line center.

Even if Jim Dowd had wanted to stay with the team, he wouldn't have quite fit the bill(speaking of, what was his story anyway? Was he interested in sticking around, or is he planning on actually retiring now? Anyone know?).

If Briere to wing, and Metro centering the 3rd does indeed happen...and it goes well, perhaps 4th line center duties are handed to someone like Downie or possibly Matsumoto. Although, perhaps they'd just attempt to acquire someone cheap....perhaps someone more in the vein of Jim Dowd.

I would guess that if they had been looking for a guy to strictly handle 4th line center, and not necessarily be capable of moving up....they would've made an effort to keep Dowd(again, I don't know exactly what the story is with him) for dirt cheap, or acquire someone else for around the league minimum. It's not like Metro is exactly coming at a high price at 1m per, but still....I imagine they could have found cheaper if they hadn't wanted what I am suggesting they did.

I do believe he was just making a joke about the way Kukks was generally treated last season...which very well may continue this season.

Metro, Downie should be 3rd line center and Carter should be a winger.

Bingo, Carter has some great tools to be a winger. Likes to shoot, great speed and size, doesn't like to pass. Powerful on the boards.

You guys will like Metro. He's reliable, but he's also pretty nifty with the puck. He'll have a bit more creativity than your average fourth line center but not at the cost of being a defensive reliability or anything. When one of your top guys goes down he can step in and put up some points as well. Did not look out of place on the Bruins powerplay last year when he got the chance (not that that means anything to you guys I suppose). Won't drop the gloves, but doesn't play a soft game either.
