Isles down to six healthy NHL dmen

With Martinek out for six weeks, Timander in Philly. The prospect of a deal involving one of the Isles top four seems even dimmer than earlier.

If Martinek does not look good to go soon, we may see the Isles try to add a depth dman at the deadline. Nothing special - something like the Van Impe deal a few seasons ago.

Yeech.

See Crew's post below for info on the Isles attempts to acquire depth defenders:

I think that we will make a deal for a little better for dman than a van impe type. Im thinking along the lines of Carney or hopefully Salei. We will see what happens. Please no Gauthier though.

Timander has been great in Philadelphia. Nothing special, but very solid defensively and much better than Therien. I can't believe he couldn't keep a spot with the Isles. Maybe he's just stepped up his game (or simplified it.)

I can't wait until Desjardins comes back and Therien sits. I'm getting giddy just thinking about it.

Timander was serviceable in his limited time, but with Cairns,Martinek and Butenchon all ahead of him it made his contract expendable. You can't expect the Isles with a limited budget to keep a guy that makes that much in the minors.

Martinek was averaging almost 13 minutes a game.I hope the isles can pick someone up.I don't mind Butenschon getting a few more mins but I don't want Cairns getting extra mins.

Any interest in Erskine? Tippet rarely plays him and he needs to play. Tunik?

Why does Tippet rarely play him and is his potential a top 4 d-man?

part of the problem here is that the Isles don't really have anything of substance to offer in a deal. Ownership has forbid deals involving prospects, and the Isles don't have enough depth up front to deal a vet. So, I think the sort of deal the Isles will look to make will be a 4th or 5th round pick for a #7 dman type. I don't think Erskine will qulify, since his value is higher than that.

Darth I disagree, and i think that they will offer up a decent prospect if the right trade comes. That being said, i doubt you would see a Nilsson or Bergenheim get dealt, but a colliton or chernyk may. Also mapletoft, who prob just wont fit on this team

The only way I see that happening is if the Isles wind up turning one of their forward prospects into a good young defnese prospect (which would make sense from an organizational perspective). But, a deal like that won't address the short term need.

I suppose it is also possible that somebody like Papineau or Asham gets dealt, for a 5/6 dman.
