Wrong, October 10 2008, Montreal will open their 99th season in Buffalo, their 91st NHL season.

Wrong, it's the 99th season.

2008-2009 is the 91st NHL season, just do a search on Google.

91+8 = 99.

It's the 100th year.

The Club was formed in December 1909, therefore the Club will be in its 100th year of existence from December 2008 to December 2009.

I always thought to myself that CHFANS members were stupid, but not THAT stupid.

Get your facts straight, the lockout counts as an undisputed season.

92+8 = 100.

Don't you think it's more stupid to call someone else stupid, hiding behind a stupid keyboard, behind a stupid monitor, sitting on a stupid desk?

Secondly, before calling others stupid, do a little research.

Here, a little help to avoid typing with your fingers.

Search Google for 91st NHL Season

Oh, and maybe you can excuse my stupid help, but here's another link:

2008-2009 NHL Season from Wikipedia

My goodness! 2008-2009 will be the 91st season, not the 92nd!

And how many NHA seasons did the Montreal Canadiens play?

8.

And I'll let you count on your little fingers 91 + 8.

So, before insulting others and looking like a fool, validate your arguments.

p.s. I ain't with CHFANS anymore.

Exactly... so what?? Its the 99th season... okay you are right... but you still have done nothing. These celebrations will still go on and us fans will enjoy them... meanwhile you can skip them and wait for next year, but don't be surprised if the team isn't celebrating the same way.

Well, that's what I'm doing, changing it. It takes time, but it will happen.

I have a big mouth. I was the one who contacted the french media to talk about the CBS Sweater Showdown last season. Thanks to RDS and LCN, we won't it hands down.

We were losing against Columbus, cuz nobody knew about this contest. I wrote about it on my site and a few sites and it wasn't enough.

I mean, losing against Columbus.. I couldn't take it. So I contacted Patrick Roy (not the player, the chief editor of RDS) and they posted a news on RDS.CA. Minutes after that, we won't the first round by a close margin and won every round after that. Not only that, we killed the Toronto Maple Leafs, as we voted against them in their own competition. It was funny.

I will celebrate as of december 4th as the beginning of the 100th year. I will celebrate in 2009 and work my ass off to get tickets for the all-star game and as many games as possible.

But I will rectify anyone trying to create a false hype about 2008-2009.

I'm doing it respectfully, without insulting anyone, but I'm persistent, like a virus. :-)

I just contacted the Ticket counter of the Montreal Canadiens and they don't know when it will be announced, but yes, it will be available through them and admission.

I STRONGLY suggest to get your tickets when they release them, by going yourself, because Admission always have 'problems' for the first 60-90 minutes, to allow first dibs to the people waiting in line.

Getting fans to vote in a poll vs Changing the minds of NHL executives and their plans is a big, big, big difference.

The first pucks in the 91st NHL regular season will drop in two European countries that have supplied the League with a number of premier players over the last two decades.
That dude previously was right, it's the 99th season for the Habs but it's their 100th year of existance.

Thats cause the celebrations were planned before the lockout. This should be their 100th year if you count the lockout as a season... If you don't then its their 99th season. Thats the debate.

The point however remains... these celebrations "draft, all-star, jersey retirements, centennial plaza, etc..." were all planned before the lockout. The team is not gonna change everything and delay it all now when they have put so much work into this year.

This doesn't make much sense; isn't a century of existence a good reason to celebrate too ? Why don't you just change the thread title and stop arguing on a lost cause for God's sake.

Its not a century of existence.... the 100th birthday is Dec 4, 2009... or during the 09-10 season.

Good point. That maybe things have been planned earlier.

But wasn't the all-star, draft and centennial plaza announced after the lock-out year? I believe it was.

Yep, maybe they are trying to hide this mistake and make everything go as planned.

It's quite weird to start celebrating a birthday 15 months before it occured.

We did not start celebrating Quebec city's 400th birthday last summer. We started a few months before the official date, not 15th.

Awarding the draft and all-star game during the 100th year is ok, a good gesture from the league and still timely cuz they always occur during the second year of a season.

But something special should be done for the 100th season as well. A good outdoor game with the lowly Leafs might be a good thing.

Are we allowed to say lowly Leafs here? Not sure. If not, I apoligize and will modify my post.

It's like saying Manchester United has been around for 18 years, since the Premier League started in 1991!
Manchester who?

Just kidding.

Saying the Canadiens are 90 years old would be like saying the Red Devils are 18 years old.

I'm not claiming that.

I like Beakermania's point about things might have been planned before hand. I will do some more digging.

And you will still continue to think that 2007-2008 was the 99th season when it's written everywhere that 2008-2009 is the 99th or can be counted as the 99th cuz it's written everywhere that it's the 91st NHL season?
Then why don't you restate the argument as:

"Do we count the lokout season or not"

Because that is what the argument is essentially.

Just because the NH:L didn't have a game that year doesn't mean the HABS didn't exist and couldn't count a year. Maybe Gainey's dealing and working count as a season for the Habs?

Let me put it this way:

"the NHL doesn't count the lockout season for its historical purpose, but the Habs and the NHL count the lockout season as a season in the history of the franchise"

How bout that?

Does that make it 100 now?

Thats what they are celebrating.....to hell with the NHL season and that crap....the bottom line is that the Habs have been around for 100 years and thats what the celebration is all about. People can argue about what season it is in the NHL all you want, it doesn't change the fact that the Habs have been around for 100 years.
