On a list of the best current guitar players...

Where would Mike McCready rank? The guy has been underrated as a guitar player for so long, his chops remind me of Hendrix, very bluesy and aggresive as well....

All due respect to the dude, but if we're talking most talented current guitarists, he's way the hell down the list.

Fortunately for him, technical ability means almost nothing when it comes to being a great guitar player.

McCready is very good, but because he typical saves his best work for live shows, he'll be relegated to the realm of underrated.

Whether you want to argue technical ability, musical ability, soul, whatever, he's nowhere near the top.

I'd not saying he's a lousy guitarist, but he's not a virtuoso by any stretch of the imagination.

I've never thought of McCready as being underrated. I think anyone who listens to Pearl Jam knows how talented he is.

Well, that's a matter of opinion. A lot of people would disagree.

He's good, one of my favorites, but there are better out there.

I am a massive PJ fan too and I agree, PJ fans waaaaaay over rate MM, over at their official message board they call him the master and compare him to Stevie Ray Vaughn and Jimi Hendrix.

I love Mike, he shreds and has great showmanship, especially live he is awesome, and he is one of the nicest, coolest , down to earth rock stars you will ever meet but I wouldn't even rank him in the top 10 of best current guitar players.

In the context of PJ, he's fantastic - and that's the most important part. By himself as a player he's probably average in the music business. Would I find his playing, by himself sitting in a chair, no band - engaging? Not likely. He doesn't really bring anything exciting to the table in that way but there's nothing wrong with that because it's not his game.

And yeah, Gilbert is sick. Perfect technique, but the guy can literally play anything and it's never cold and sterile. And he just loves playing and it comes across in his music.

While there may be many good guitar players out there, there is NOONE better than David Gilmore. He did a concert 2 years ago and the finale was Comfortably Numb with David Bowie. This video is 9:38, but from the 4:35 point, its ALL guitar solo from Gilmore and is just ridiculous. This is the best guitar solo EVER. Pink Floyd fans will love this, so turn the volume all the way up.

Not among the best, but he clearly does not get the respect he deserves.

I'd say he's relatively unknown to a lot of people, and it's evident when guys like Kurt Cobain rank Top 10 on recent "Best Guitarist" lists.

No offense, but even by Gilmore's standards, the solo wasn't that great. Fairly sloppy. You can tell that he was improvising...and there were a few rough patches. What really makes that solo great is the chord progression.

Funny that you've got John Frusciante in your avatar because he's the first comparable guitarist I thought of when listening to youtube clips of McCready. Both are quite good in the roles they play with their respective bands but neither blows me away with their solos.

No offense, but there's no comparison to be made to Hendrix.

In terms of playing style they are very similar (as Hendrix is a huge influence on McCready. Case in point:

I know nothing about guitars, I just like the sound that Slash plays.

Gonna throw out the name Billy Corgan, not going to convince myself hes elite as a guitar player but fantastic songwriter, definitely has a lot of talent. hes my favorite and wanted to throw the name out.

Graham Coxon and Omar Rodriguez Lopez are probably my two favourites right now.

As long as we're throwing names out there, I'd like to mention Brian Carroll, aka Buckethead.

Frusciante's roll in RHCP is much different. His style has also changed a ton since Mothers Milk, in which he was basically playing shred solos. Not to mention McCready is/was not very much involved in the writing process. Hey may be now, I don't follow them as much...

Graham Coxon is probably the best current one. John Squire owuld equal him if he would quit the painting and start playing the guitar again.
