Bobby Orr: Greatest Player of All Time?

I think Bobby Orr was the greatest player of all time, he revolutionized the defenseman position. He definitely had the scoring touch of Gretzky as well as the defensive ability where no one could beat him.

"He's what all hockey player's should try to be like." -Bobby Clarke
"While his defensive abilities were oustanding, his skills on the attack would change the way the game was played forever." -Lanny McDonald

This is what happens when someone posts in the HoH forum without reading a single thread, especially not the sticky ones up top of the list.

And both are inferior to Gordie Howe.

The point is 'Bobby Orr is the best player of all-time' isn't exactly a controversial opinion around here ... Orr, Gretzky and Howe are universally considered the three candidates for best ever, and those 3 + Mario Lemieux are mortal locks 1-4.

I agree with you in one respect- Orr probably had the highest peak of any hockey player. He won the Art Ross, Hart, Norris, and Conn Smythe in the same year.
However, I would say that Gretzky was a better player. For a solid decade he was easily the best player in the league, shattering every offensive record, winning 4 cups, and lighting up every goaltender in the NHL.
Orr's career only lasted a decade, whereas Wayne was a great player for almost 20 years.
I would rank them as follows:
Gretzky
Orr
Howe
Lemieux

Many people hold to the opinion that Lemieux is top 3 as well.

that is true but you have to remember Orr was a defenseman and he was one of the toughest players ever that is why his career was shortened, because he suffered from knee problems

Bobby Clarke also said to Wayne Gretzky: "Bobby Orr was an amazing hockey player, but I always knew where he was coming from. I have no idea where you are coming from Wayne"

There is no right answer for the top 4 players. They are just the top 4 players with fine arguments for each.

Orr's Knees took a beating because he liked to Deke through traffic(Something they teach kids NOT to do)

Many of the same Problems Lemieux faced. When you try to speed through traffic, and 9 out of 10 times you make it, there is always that one out of 10 collision which is usually very bad for any body part.

His own style was the cause of his shortened career. it allowed him to be who he was and ruined him at the same time.

Now, do us all a favor and stop trying to talk like your opinion is fact and is the only right opinion. Or at least give more than one sentence responses is you are going to debate and answer all points.

He was far and away the best d-man in history.

Yes, his career was cut short, but the fact is that Gretzky accomplished more.

Orr never took a game or shift off and your knees can only take so much

Gretzky did that because of Orr's short career

You can't give him credit because of "what if..."
You have to include Orr's short career as a part of the player as a whole.

That Gretzky is one of the greatest players of all time but no one knows what Orr could have done if he had 10 more years in the NHL.

... but he didn't.

Just think how good Eric Lindros would have been if he would have avoided injuries.

... but he didn't.

Just think how good I would have been had I started playing hockey at 3 instead of soccer.

... but I didn't.
