Naslund Will Wear Jersey #91

Seems that Gomez is going to keep 19. Nothing really substantial but just wanted to share. Hopefully Zherdev will have to give up his #13 if you get my drift...(hopefully for A LOT less then he was offered in Vancouver)

That is, if Mats Sundin signs with the Rangers (#13).

Even if Sundin signs with the Rangers (which he won't), he won't just have "rights" to #13. Zherdev is already listed that way on the Rangers website, that's the way it'll stay.

This is a nice thread to go along with the 50 others that have claimed that Naslund has chosen # 91 without any documentation......

If Sundin signed with the Rangers he'd have that number in 2 seconds and I'm sure Zherdev would have zero problem with it.

based on what, exactly?

did I miss something? Is Sundin the Almighty all of a sudden?

That'd be a great idea, good first statement to a kid who we risk bolting to Russia after a year - "Kid, you ain't good enough, so we're gonna take the number you've worn your whole life and give it to that old-timer over there."

Would be a stupid move, in my opinion.

The NHL websites are made so they can look up a players name and change the players team and it'll automatically move. By your theory, both Joseph and Kubina are wearing 31 for the Leafs next year.

based on a HOF career and being a respected leader, captain and class act, not to mention the fact that this is the way it's always been done in the NHL.

Not to mention the fact that Zherdev hasn't even donned the # in a NYR uniform.

And the fact that he may bolt to Russia doesn't mean you have to cater or coddle him.

Personally, I'd rather coddle Zherdev than Sundin.

Zherdev has the potential to become a superstar for the Rangers, and still at a very young age.

Sundin is just about over-the-hill and would be coming to "retire as a Ranger", just like so many other countless schmucks between '98 & '04. Why would you cater to him? Based on accomplishments with another team?

If Sundin really wants to play for the Rangers, let him wear another number. If the number is the sticking point, he can **** off, because that means he shouldn't be here anyway.

Obviously when teams have players that wear the same number, only one of them gets to wear it. Would you disagree that whomever was the longer-tenured team member would get to keep that number, rather than someone just recently signed?

but by my account, there's only one #13 on the Rangers, and that's Nik Zherdev.

Had Sundin signed prior to Zherdev's acquisition, then sure, he'd wear #13, because he was "here first". I don't think it's right that Zherdev was a Ranger first and would have his number given to some idiot who took months to decide he wanted to sign, all based on accomplishments (which really there aren't many, anyway) on another team.

agreed, zherdev has priority over sundin.....my hpe is zherdev will be here longer than sundin and Z was traded here before sundin signed(if he signs) so therefore sundin should have to choose another #

I bet you care more about this then Zherdev!

and you're making way too much out of it.

It's this simple--if 2 new players join a team, one being a 23 yr old who has yet to break out and the other a HOFer and 14 yr captain who is amoung the most respected in the game and who is still a top player and the 2 players have yet to play a single game for the team, the HOF vet gets the number.

It's the way it works on Hockey teams and the younger players understand and don't have a problem with it.

Whereas I agree that the NHL just moves people from team site to team site, this didn't happen for a lot of players, ie Naslund, Kalinin, Fritsche still isn't up there... even guys we re-signed like Mara and Vally weren't up there immediately. So at one time, both Voros and Rissmiller were listed with the same number. Now that's been changed. I count the rangers website as a valid source.
