I'm not sure about this. I remember him from his days with the Leafs and he was a defensive liabilty. Can't imagine he's any better after suffering that terrible eye injury.

I guess I look at this in two lights...

1.) It's a sign of respect in letting he attend camp and possibly to 'up' the level of the others play.
Showing them all they have to work and earn a spot.
2.) 'Someone' isn't feeling too good about who/what we currently have.

Let's see how this pans out.

Well, looks like Holmgren's strategy of letting every unsigned defenseman in the world be a member of the team or a tryout is keeping up. Maybe they are concerned about the offense from the blueline? Trying to have a real competition for the 2nd and 3rd pairings this year? Could be interesting, if we have Hatcher on LTIR, and Berard, Eminger, Kukkonen, Parent, and Bodrov all battling it out for three positions.

With exception of Coburn and Timonen no one is safe..

I do not see a problem.

Bring D.Markov too.

According to Bill Meltzer it seems that Homer wasn't the one who sought out Berard...

Berard would be better on the power play then Randy Jones, thats for sure.

It worked for Brian Boucher and him and Berard are good friends.

I am pretty sure that Jones and Vaananen will be on this team, but everyone else needs to show they should be there. Looks like Guenin will be there trying to make the team out of camp, too.

He still is. Berard has pretty much always been, and always will be a PP specialist.

I guess it may look something like...

Timonen-Coburn
Jones-Eminger
Vaananen-Berard
Kukkonen/Bodrov

don't look so hot

and then

Timonen-Richards
Berard-Coburn

on the PP, which is actually pretty damn good looking

that's atrocious, no way. I suppose he can make about that much in Russia so there isn't too much motivation for him to take less.

If he makes the team, it will take a lot of pressure off of Randy Jones. Parent, I've been convinced most of the summer that he will probably start in the AHL. Kukkonen likely gets dealt. I just don't want to hear Stevens ***** and moan that defensemen don't block shots since he refused to play the one guy who would.

How can they sign him for 5M when they are 4.5M over the cap? Hatcher's 3.5M comes off the books a long as he stays on LTIR, but thats not enough to get them under the cap. Also, that van Riemsdyk kid's supposed to be sick, so how can they sigh him if he has a good camp if they sigh Berard too?

JVR is going back to UNH. He won't be making the team this year, more likely in 09-10. Also Berard won't demand more than 1.0 million. He didn't even make that last year on the Island.

The Flyers do not have cap problems. This has been explained many times.

He could fit on the bottom pairing and could be used on the PK, if he makes the team.

They have cap problems until Hatcher and Rathje are put on LTIR. And they will have problems if they don't stay on LTIR.

Rathje has been on the LTIR and isn't coming back, and Hatcher is more than likely done.

Berard is offensively gifted and will certainly help the power play. Problem is with his eye injury he pretty awful defensively. I rememeber that he was really becomming a good defenseman when he suffered that injury...never been the same since. He is always a player who I think of the "what could have beens?" with.

Why not? If someone gets injured, like Hatcher or Parent, he could be on the 2nd unit.
