Really pupmped for the game. I'll be leaving in a couple hours and am so excited to finally watch some hockey again. Looking forward to seeing Aulie and Nemisz as I missed both of them during the development camp.

The Flames' (likely) line combinations for Game 1 of the Oil Country Rookie Tournament:

* Kyle Greentree-Mikael Backlund-Greg Nemisz

* Adam Cracknell-Dan Ryder-Ryley Grantham

* Brett Sutter-Mitch Wahl-Aki Seitsonen

* Lance Bouma-John Armstrong-J.D. Watt

Pairings:

* John Negrin-Keith Aulie

* Per Jonsson-Ryan Wilson

* T.J. Brodie-Matt Pelech

In net, probably, are Leland Irving and Matt Keetley.

Watt vs. Benson with Kerr doing play-by-play? Let it be so!

Wish Tremblay was there.

Excited

The 2nd period was much better. The ice out there looks just horrible, though. The puck is bouncing all over the place.

Greentree taken off the ice on a stretcher after a nasty hit from behind from Paukovich.

Saw that. Good to see him up on his feet for a few seconds. Scary moment for sure.

Backlund isn't exactly looking like a player ready to step into a top 6 role in the NHL today is he?

Keetley, Wahl and Brodie looking very good to me. Negrin just head and shoulders above everyone.

Also gotta like Benson for the Oilers.

I thought he looked good out there, maybe didn't standout as much as I was expecting him to, but it's only the first game.

Yeah, I agree. Keetley looked awesome. Maybe it's too early to call it, but I really think he's gonna be the future for this team in net.

On defence, I thought Brodie and Negrin were our best players and those were the two who stood out for me. Brodie was the surprise of the night for me.

With forwards, I thought Armstrong and Wahl looked good, Nemisz on the PP too. And I loved what I saw from Watt. He's gonna be a great agitator, and can back it up when the gloves drop. Good tilt between him and Peckham.

Flames win 1-0!

Just got back from the game. Definetly not the greatest game. Ice wasn't the greatest and two long delays sure didn't help. Always nice to beat the oilers though. Anyways here are my impressions of some of the guys that stood out. Let me know if you want to know about a guy that I didn't list.

Backlund- Didn't standout or put up any points, but thought he was dangerous most of his shifts. Sees the ice very well and definetly has good offensive instincts. Thought he looked fine defensively as well. Don't think he is ready for the big leagues yet. Hopefully he plays tomorrow night so I can get another look at him.

Nemisz- Really liked him. Didn't think his skating was an issue at all. He was keeping up with Backlund and Greentree. Big body and he definetly knows where to stand with it.

Greentree- Really hope he is ok after that brutal check from behind. What a terrible play by the oiler. Always sucks to see a player taken away by a stretcher. Hopefully it isn't serious. Also have to add whoever the jackass was that yelled "send him home" hope someone took you outside and beat the crap out of you. Show some respect. Never heard anything like that before. Total lack of class by some idiot.

Sutter- Absolutely love this kid. Doesn't quit and never stops moving his feet. Always going and giving 100% every shift. Exactly what you would expect out of a Sutter. Great shot as well for the shorthanded goal.

Wahl- Loved this pick when we made it and love it even more. Such a great player. Created quite a few chances and is great defensively. Him and Sutter were dangerous together on the PK. What a steal of a pick.

Watt- What a little agitator he is. Him and Peckham were going at it all night. He was always in the middle of everything when he was out on the ice. Decent enough skill as well. Plays on the edge and definetly can back it up. He has his reputation for a reason.

Bouma- My surprise forward of the night. Finishes every check and is always moving his feet. Him, Watt and Armstrong were a pretty solid gritty line. Didn't show much skill wise, but definetly gives it his all.

Negrin- Another guy that I love since he was drafted. Just a tremendous game from him. Every facet of the game he was just solid. Joined the rush, made good pinches and was solid defensively. Such a great skater and can make the breakout pass.

Pelech- So so night from him. Seemed to have some skate issues as he was having some problems in the first. Absolutely laid out some oiler in the 2nd. Not his greatest game I thought.

Brodie- Agree with the others. Thought he looked very good. Jumped up in the rush quite a bit and was fine defensively. Definetly a bit of a surprise.

Keetley- Great game by him. Got some good breaks early on with a couple posts, but settled down and looked great. Him and Irving should be a good combination for Quad Cities this season.

Looking forward to tomorrow night's game against the Canucks. Hope to see Irving in net.

^^That hit on Greentree made me sick to my stomach, honestly. It has coloured my whole view of the game. I can get it out of my mind, I just hope he is okay.

Yep. Reading up on it I guess this is the second time that oiler has had a major hit like this. You would hope the guy would learn the first time.

HF's own Guy Flaming wrote about his first "incident".

http://www.thehockeynews.com/article...o-victims.html

It was a dirty hit by a dirty player, who it seems hasn't reformed.

From Boomer's post-game blog:

Quote:
The ice unfortunately was brutal. It was confirmed to us after the game by goaltending coach David Marcoux that goaltender Kevin Lalande caught a rut this morning in the ice and sustained a high ankle sprain. He was wearing a cast after the game, so obviously this doesn't mean good things for him.

I saw most but not all of the game...It looked like to me that they are easing Ryder back in after his year off...It's going to take a little time for him to get into the feel of the game again but I think he'll be fine come opening day of the AHL.

Update: Greentree out of hospital, neck strain

Quote:
But Kyle Greentree's injury he was rammed into the boards by Geoff Paukovich in the third period is what everyone was talking about, post-game.

However, there's good news.

The winger, who left on the ice on a stretcher, has been released from hospital with a neck strain.
