Official plan B - says Gainey

From non other than Sir Bob himself,

http://tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=247648&l...s=topStory_nhl

He says the likelihood of Sundin signing with us is low and hasn't had contact with him in a week.

Gainey also says that he will wait until Sundin officially decides his destination before he explores other options

Finally, Gainey says he will target teams which are over the cap if we cannot get Sundin.....Nylander maybe?

"I know that certain other teams are presently over the salary cap," he explained. "We'll have to see. If Mats doesn't join us, maybe we'll discuss things with those teams"

in Bob we trust!

what will BG do with close to 7mil in cap space? will he make a trade? sign someone else? here are some options, take your pick!

I wonder if Buffalo would entertain offers for Connolly. I know he's oft injured, but if healthy he plays a game that would suit us.

I think we should play more youth if possible, in january maybe, depending on how things work-out, trade for the missing link, if any..

Gainey never said official plan B. He said maybe we'll explore options with teams in cap situations. Did anyone read the words, 'we will' or 'Plan B' ? Next week we'll ask why he went back on what he said which he didn't say.

McPhee ftw as I'm pretty sure Gainey said, on SportsCentre or in an article, they'll wait until September for Sundin (if need be).

Yeah, that would be pretty typical. Like that time he and Boivin supposedly "promised" a star player, when what they actually said is that they now felt they could get one and would do everything possible to sign one.

It's then so easy to play the blame game when putting words not spoken into people's mouths.

Did Havlat get his shoulder surgery in the off-season?

He's Buffalo's #1 C, and since they aren't rebuilding or in cap trouble. I highly doubt they would be interested in trading him, especially to a division rival. But I agree, he would fit in nicely on our team.

Gainey doesn't need to do anything now. He has the luxury to watch the team start the season, assess the weaknesses and then make a move. He is in a postion of strength with the team's cap space and pool of prospects.

Thank you mcphee, some posters only read half of a printed article and miss out on the important things said.

It's kind of a pet peeve of mine, how we take the next leap with a statement. Remember Gainey listing Chichura as one the C's on the dpth chart ? That became a public endorsement of him, or a guaranteed job.

I've done the same when threads start about something Lafleur said, or the latest 110% diatribe. I'd spout an opinion than have it politely suggested to me that what I was reacting to was never said.

Look at comments we've had about supposed Higgins' quotes ?

Are you sure that's not Derek Roy you're talking about?

I had a dream that we signed Brian Savage to a 1 month contract. Anyway that's always what he gave us... 1 month.

As long as those other teams wait for Sundin, we are okay until he signs anywhere.

Oh I agree, I'm definitely guilty of it as well. So I do try to read as much as I can before I open my big mouth here. It doesn't always work, but it's not from lack of effort.
