Greg Stewart

I was just remembering that last game against the leafs where Stewart was nothing short of amazing. (Fight with McCabe, break-away)

And then, I wondered...

Where does he fit in the line-up? I would really like to see him.

Kovalev Plek Kost
Higgins Koivu Tanguay
Skost Lapierre Latendresse
Laraque Kostopoulos Dandenault Stewart Chipchura

(positions are wrong, don't bother telling me!!)

And I'm not even touching the Sundin madness... Kind of sucks for him...Any chance for him to beat Kosto/Laraque as a grinder? Those who have seen more of him in Hamilton than one game in the NHL???

We are too stacked on the fourth line so i doubt he will ever get a chance to play for us unless we get a ******** of injuries.

btw, A.Kost is double shifting in your line up

fixed! thx. He made such an impression in that last game, gritty play. I guess he has Chipchura already penciled on the Canadiens roster to beat to get a spot in the line-up...

He fits in the AHL. One meaningless game aside where he was gritty while the Leafs were imploding/not trying, he's not good enough to break the logjam of veteran 4th line forwards.

When I last ran into his Dad, he said he expects to spend another season in Hamilton, but is working with the goal of cracking the roster this season.

I would rather have him than Dandenault.

He's a futre NHLer. Maybe nothing more than a 4th liner, but Stewart has a place ion the NHL. Hopefully he Lapierre and Conboy form our 4th line in a couple of years...

Tanguay-Koivu-Kostitsyn
Kostitsyn-Plekanec-Kovalev
Higgins-Chipchura-Latendresse
Kostopoulos-Lapierre-Laraque

Add maybe Sundin and Pacioretty later in the season and there is just no place for him. There's no place for Begin and Dandenault already..

He'll be called up in case of injuries, and may take Kosto spot next season.

Don't get too excited. I think you have to give more consideration to what he's accomplished on the AHL thus far, rather than in 1 NHL game.

Not that his AHL progression is looking that bad. To paraphrase what Lever said last season, if a few of his guys were willing to get their noses dirty like Stewart they'd end up on the scoresheet more offten.

Which will put him in the stands. I rather have Dandenault there than Stewart. Stewart needs to be better Bégin or Kosto.

+1

It's absolutely ridiculous that people put so much stock into one game where Stewart was basically the only guy on the ice trying.

One game is one game. For him, it was a great game. He will be in Hamilton IMO, waiting 10 game or so until Begin goes down with some shoulder injury.
Having said that, he then will be sent down after 5 or 6 game to get ice time.
Let's face it guys, Bob is building a real team with lots of guys fighting for their spot all season long. No time for slackers cause if one slacks a bits, will be in the stand very quickly. This depth will keep guys honest.

Assuming he lasts 10 games. Then again, considering we have kosto & laraque, do you think he'll get that shoulder injury in the pressbox?

There is no room for Stewart this season, but id expect he makes the team next year.

I'd rather have him on the 4th line at 500k then guys like Begin/Dandeneault or Kostopolous at over 1 million. We will need those extra dollars to retain all our UFA/RFA's.

I think this year Stewart is the 14th or 15th forward, waiting for a call in case of injuries, I think next year he becomes a cheaper alternative to guys like Begin, Kostopoulos and Dandenault. I see him as part of the team as a 12th/13th forward in 09-10.

As others have said he seems like he would be 5th on the 4th line depth chart.

Since we can count on Begin being injured at some point Im sure he'll be called up as that 4th guy and should get a few starts over Kostopolos or Laraque.

I'll be very surprised if Stewart plays anymore than 3 games this year for the Habs. Even then it will only be in an extreme emergency. Or as a late season call up.

Bégin Kostopoulos and Dandeneault are all UFA after this year.. Stewart has to continue his good progression, I really like this kid as a futur quality grinder..

I agree, I really like what I've seen from the kid. But until those 3 players that you listed are gone. I don't really see him cracking our line up just yet. Besides, another season developing in Hamilton getting more icetime is probably the best thing for him.

Am I the only one who thinks that Dandenault can have a good season? It will be his second season as a full-time forward and he has the wheels and experience to put some numbers up in this his UFA season. I'm hoping it will take more than Greg Stewart to force him off the roster until we get a chance to evaluate just how he is going to compete this year.

I might agree if Dandenault was a lot younger. But not including last year, he still played a lot of hockey as a forward with the Wings. He's shown that during spurts, he can be a solid player. As for putting up some numbers, I think that's a pipe dream my friend.

I'm going out on a limb here, but yes. You are. I think you're forgetting that Dandenault was once a forward in Detroit who didn't put up great numbers. Why would you expect it now?

He'll make the team in '09-'10, when Bégin and Kostopoulos' contracts run out and he's the cheaper alternative.
