Wouldn't the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd of been a better return for them? and by them I mean the Senators.

Yeah, im somewhat new to the board, but im surrounded by more ottawa fans then there are on this board.

Im not a sens fan either so im not blinded by any red goggles. AND id notice that kind of silly comparison.

That is a pretty bad defense.
maybe that's why they are dressing 4 D pairs

I think OTT did poorly in this exchange. I wish ATL had signed him if that's all it took.

I'd say this makes more sense if only because they could use some more bodies on their defense. After the top pairing of Phillips-Volchenkov, they have some depth but would be relying pretty heavily on Lee. Kuba and Picard at least give them some depth for the 3-6 spots that draft picks wouldn't have.

Meszaros didn't sign an offer sheet with a team TBD.
He signed an offer sheet with a team: TB.

I'd say Ottawa made out pretty well here. That's a nice return for an RFA.

Not sure what to think from Tampa's side. Meszaros is good, but they still need some great defensemen.

Probably, but Tampa Bay didn't have their third round pick to trade. It belongs to the Penguins from them acquiring Malone and Roberts' rights.

You're getting the first round pick, Kuba and Picard are worth more than a second and a third rounder. I'd say they come out ahead for the present. And even in the future they could potentially be winners. Depends on the 1st rounder and how Picard works out.

This deal is fine for Ottawa considering they were likely to lose Meszaros anyways, they got good value for him.

I actually quite like the Sens. My favourite team in the East.

I wonder what Meszaros is gonna do.
Now that is variety.

Anyway, here is the story as I understand it...

Tampa attempted trade for Meszaros, and the teams couldn't initially agree...

Tampa and Meszaros then agreed on an offer sheet, in principal, but a deal could not be finalized because Tampa need to posses it's own 1st, own 2nd, and own 3rd before an offersheet could be officially signed...

Pittsburgh owns Tampa's 3rd and was unwilling to part with it becuase Ray Shero didn't want to have anything to do with an offer sheet...

Tampa was then forced to work out a traditional trade with Ottawa...

Ottawa pulled off a hell of a trade, bolstering their defense in the present, and picking up a 1st to help offset what they lose in futures....

The Lightning got pretty good value on a pretty good player, but are now even more thin on D...

Oh, for sure, especially if they gave up Picard and a first round pick for him.

What I meant was, have the terms of his contract been released?

Just use the search function and type in Phanuef vs Meszaros, or Meszaros is better than Phanuef

I swore i heard earlier on sportsdesk before they announced the trade that TSN had heard that Ottawa was threatening to make a trade with Pittsburgh for Tampa's 3rd rounder so that the offer sheet for Mez couldnt go through.

Our franchise player is going to be 36 years old this year. Some prospects that might work out 4 years from now don't do us a whole lot of good.

No I don't think it would. The Senators is basically a win now team. After loosing Meszaros the team will really suck at moving the puck from the blue line. It wouldn't work out for the Sens that way.

EDIT:

IMO, Kuba > 2nd + 3rd rd picks, San Jose 1st + Picard = Tampa 1st.

Having 3 all-star forwards and not much beyond that plays out awesome all the time, I mean look at... Wait, didn't Tampa just finish last?
